How do benefit races work? Does a % of the entry fees go to the person that's being benefited (like for health reasons, etc)?

Usually all money made off the race is given to the family.  The % help out, exhibitions, sometimes even the concession.  Now if the arena isn't donated I think they keep the arena cost out.

That is how the ones I have dealt with do it.

We put one on for a good friend of mine that has brain cancer back in November. We gave all the profits from the race to him. All exhibition money, profits off entry fees, etc. We also ran a silent auction at the same time. We had sponsors donate the arena, tractor use, and silent auction items. Total we raised almost 10,000.

Around here the money remaining after any expenses is given to the person/family/cause.
It is usually easy to find an area/facilities to use for free or next to nothing. Might have to pay for the lights if you need them. Someone generally donates a tractor to use for the day and announcers are usually more than willing to donate their time.

I did a benefit run for an association member and friend back in November.  She has colon cancer.  I worked really hard on the event and had all of my expenses covered on the front-end.  When it was said and done we gave her $4200 that we made that day.    I didn't advertise any added money that wasn't guaranteed from sponsors.  We actually capped the added money we were adding at $1500 so we would keep the entry fees lower, the remainder of the sponsorship money went to arena rental, water wagon rental, and fuel for the donated tractors.  I appointed someone to be in charge of the silent auction, this lady also handled getting t-shirts made.   Our friend is a well-loved person throughout our entire state barrel racing scene.  In times of trouble and sickness, friends pull together to help.  Social media is your friend.  Make an event page and start promoting the event and seeking sponsors.
