I'm going to start teaching a 12 year old lessons. He's a compentent rider already, but his grandmother wants to refine his skills for a 4H Ranch Horse Show coming up. I have obstacles like opening and going through a gate, gait changes, stepping over poles, and dragging an object behind your horse for him to practice, but what else can I give him to work on before the show? I cannot find a copy of a pattern anywhere online, and am waiting to hear back from the show director. Any suggestions?

Bridge-could even be a teeter/tooter bridge. Water. Show had 4x6 timbers made into a 8x10' box frame, laid tarp in it, filled with water, then spread pieces of styrofoam on top. Open and close a mail box. Sidepassing poles. Back through an L. Those are just standard obstacles.

You might try going to ACTHA's website and check out their obstacles. They have good explanations of each of them.

Thanks y'all!
I'm excited to be participating (secondhand) in Ranch shows versus just being a bystander.

Look at ARHA and ASHA handbooks. They have the minimum requirements.

Throwing a rope at a steer head, and loading in a trailer I think are 2 of them. Also, you'll want to work a rope gate and a regular gate. It depends on the set up that they have as to what type of gate they'll use and they both are worked differently.

L- shaped back through, figure 8 back through is pretty common. Bridges too. And 360 in a box, side pass down a log or a L-shaped side pass.
