On February 12, 2015, a horse Prior Lake, MN tested positive for Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1). The horse had rarely left the property in the past 3 years and the farm is under a 21-day quarantine. Location: Riding Crackhead. | What the heck? MN has a case this time of year? I guess I'm dumb founded because I thought you needed cool damp conditions like in the spring. MN in Jan/Feb is mot cool and damp. Cold as heck but not cool. |

In light of the recent EHM case in MN, we thought we’d provide owners with additional information.
Equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) is a contagious virus that can cause four clinical presentations: neurological disease (EHM), respiratory disease, neonatal death, and abortion. A fever commonly precedes other clinical signs. The respiratory form of the disease causes fever, coughing and nasal discharge. Abortions usually occur in late pregnancy with no warning signs. Symptoms for the neurologic form include hind–end weakness and incoordination, urine dribbling or inability to urinate, and horses being unable to stand. By 2 years of age, almost all horses have been infected with EHV-1. The initial exposure generally occurs in foals from contact with their dams. The virus can then become latent, or inactive, in the horse’s body, setting up a carrier state that is life-long. Horses of any age that are carriers of EHV-1 do not show any external signs of disease when the virus is in a latent form. The virus can be reactivated during times of stress, such as strenuous exercise, long-distance transport, or at weaning.

| There have been several cases reported in the Galvestion TX area and one vet facility has been quarantined. These horses apparently had attended the Ft Worth Stock show. A few stallion owners in the South Texas area are sweating bullets right now. |
