Location: Millen Ga | OK so I have a nicely bred mare with a suspensory injury, vet says breed her. I have been all over the place with what to breed to- mainly what can I afford- had someone approach me about paying the stud fee for a well known stallion for half interest in the foal, but wants to market it before its born. I have seen people do this before, but how do you put a value on that foal? When do you start advertising it? Seems to me that it would be better to wait till its born to try to sell it. This is why I DONT DO BROODMARES. lol I almost would rather lease her to them but that opens a whole other slew of issues. So what is standard in the industry? |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Partnerships are REALLY hard to keep fair and make everyone happy, especially since so many unkowns can pop up with raising babies, things that you wouldn't think to put in a contract. That is also why I don't sell foals in utero. I have had some email and ask, but I would rather hold out and see what hits the ground first. Then price accordingly. If they are that good to sell in utero, they are that good to sell at a week old. I hate giving money back and would feel obligated if the foal were to be born with something wrong.

Location: Millen Ga | That is my concern too. I know most studs have a live foal guarantee, but hopefully after a year off I can bring the mare back. If something happens to the foal, Im obligated to let her carry a foal for another year. Thanks for making this an easier choice- I kinda "knew" it but needed to hear it from someone else. |

 Can You Hear Me Now?
Location: When you hit the middle of nowhere .. Keep driving | I have only ever done 2 partnerships on horses. One with my late father and one with my Mother. I would only trust these people. They knew I was young and needed help to realize my dream so they offered what they could. I now want to make my father proud and he's the reason I haven't given up when times have gotten tough lately. |

Location: Desert Land | Selling in utero is VERY hard. I have several clients with top notch well accomplished mares and even trying to sell those in utero - people just don't want the risk of it not coming out the way they want it. We have sold some in utero or had people put deposits, but most people say, "Call me when it's born and I'd be interested in it." |

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | Most live foal guarantees are "stands and nurses". Which does you NO good if the foal has something fatal wrong with it, but it DOES stand and nurse then dies a day or 2 later.

On the flip side of that, I've had several people want to buy foals before they are even born. I won't price them or sell, either one, until after they are born & on the ground healthy. I've just always felt like there are too many things that can go wrong or happen to an equine pregnancy, so I'd be jinxing myself! If I sold one in utero, that'd be the one that ended up getting aborted or some darn thing! |

Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm | I have had people want to put a deposit on a certain mares foal before it's born. So far I've talked them out of it. I don't want to take money and have something happen and have to give it back. I don't even like to take a deposit before they are weaned. I'm more protective of a foal that's sold and would keep them separate from the rest. That's not fair to the foal, not to live normally in a group. |

Location: Millen Ga | Thanks Y'all. I told them I appreciated the offer but I just worry that its to much "what ifs" that can go wrong and I didnt feel comfortable with it. |
