What's a Calcutta?
A Calcutta is when the riders are auctioned off. It is a completely separate pot from the barrel race. Whoever bought the winning rider gets the pot. I don't know if it pays like 1st, 2nd, 3rd or just the winner. This is done in golf a lot. It really is fun. The really good riders usually bring big bucks. Years ago at the Texas Barrel Racing Futurity they were innocently having their Calcutta when they got raided!!! It was one of those cold days in TX when it was raining about three inches per hour. Some friends of mine had to slip out through a crack in the tarps around the building to keep from getting arrested. Scared the crap out of them plus they really got soaked. We still laugh about that one.
Interesting. Why is it illegal? Seems like there a lot bigger fish to fry. |

| SC Wrangler - 2015-02-23 10:33 AM I personally think it went fairly well for a totally new and untried concept. It was a great opportunity for some of the total unknowns to get a little bit of sponsorship and additional exposure as well as some contributions to decent endeavors. I bet it will expand expotentially in the future.
I thought it was an interesting concept. I think it will get bigger each year. |

| S.G., all the contestants were in the silent auction then they brought back the 50 highest bidded ones to continue on with the live bidding. I thought it was pretty unorganized. |

The one who wins the bid gets his/her business name on the contestants back. 85% of the money goes to OKC Cowboy Hall of Fame, Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Ft. Worth, and another hall of fame... maybe PRCA Hall of Fame. Then 15 % of the bid goes to the contestant. Actually it is the other way on the %, 85 to the contestant and 15 to the charities. Pretty cool!
K I AM LOST WHY WOULD 85% go to the consteant just because or do they have to win it?
On a calcutta the bidder buyer get the pay off if he wins and most tip the rider.

No they do not have to win anything..... like they do in a Calcutta. We just brought up Calcutta as example in this whole thing not being weird or creepy. This auction is just flat money given to the contestant for allowing the sponsorship on their shirt during the rodeo and the 15% for the charities. |

Ok, that makes more sense. I was a little confused too. I thought it was unorganized as well, but I guess it all came out in the wash. I just wish they would mute Bob Tallman's microphone. I often wonder if some of these rodeo announcers speak in that voice when having regular conversation. lol |

It was setup as a bonus to the contestants, they all started the bidding at $500. They did not have back numbers last year, just a small number on the front of their shirt, so that 'real estate' was available. Why not give the contestants more money and part of the goal was to get new sponsors involved in rodeo? I think it is a great idea and they can improve on it next year. |

It is considered parimutual wagering. TX does not allow that. You cannot place a bet on TVG from TX. |
