Oscar has come a long ways since he came to our place. He's gone from kicking and not letting anyone within 20 feet to chasing (only) our trucks down the fence when we come home. He follows me around every where wanting his butt scratched & I've been able to touch all the way down his back legs and sometimes all the way down his front legs. I've rubbed him down with ropes.

But... he's still skittish - he'll dart off only to come back. I've gotten a leather rope around his neck one time and then he pouted like a cat afterwards. Of course, they did rope him and drag him behind a car at one point, so there's not telling what's going through his little brain! But I need need to get a halter on him and I don't have a chute.

So tonight I stepped it up a notch and (gently) roped him in the stall and we worked on learning to give to pressure.... I guess the ranch clinics paid off after all!

Still got a long ways to go but we made a tiny step of progress.

No telling what he went through with the yahoos he was with. You can tell he wants attention and he wants to trust, he's just not real sure. I was surprised I got him just releasing enough to look at me tonight. That's a small bit of progress.

I have had donkies for years. If they dont know you they are kinda aloof. Just touch them every day for about a week he will be following you around like a dog. They like bread,,potato chips, sugar cookies.

Great job!  Donkeys are tough.  Just keep working on gaining his trust.  When that happens, total transformation.
Yahooing a donkey or any long ear does not work at all.  They are very good at holding grudges.

I have another update.... I finally got the halter on him today - THANK YOU JESUS!!

Although I had him giving to pressure and he was a little easier getting a rope on, he still didn't want anything within ten feet of his nose. So, I had to get a little creative.... I put the nose of the rope halter in the bucket with grain in the bottom and the long end that goes over their head I laid up against the panel so I could grab it easily.

He started eating his grain and his nose was lined up perfect for the nose piece so I very gently laid the top of the halter over the top of his head and tied it. He was too busy worrying about the grain to notice so I kept snugging the rope up a little at a time.

When he got done, he brought his head out of the bucket and boy was he surprised -- and not too happy! He pulled and lunged forward but I was able to keep his head bent and direct his feet. Finally got him to stand still and I was able to get my break away halter on underneath the rope halter.

He had his first leading lesson today..... I need to have him talk to my barrel horse and give him pointers. Every time you just cluck or kiss he jumps forward like you shot him in the butt. My barrel horse could use some of that energy!!

He's not the happiest with me at the moment for doing it, but I'm relieved to finally get it on him. It'll make things a lot easier.

I love my donkeys, they are such cool little animals. I have 3 and really enjoy them, their not pets but they do like attention when I go feed them

I got a video of leading the donkey last night.... don't let the white legs blind you!

I've enjoyed working with the little bugger - some similarities with working horses, but a lot of differences too, the main one being food! I don't use food with horses because of agressiveness, but food & scratches have been a big motivator for him. In some respects, how I've had to work with him makes more common sense.
