Subject: Exercises to improve body condition

I am starting the season soon and my semi-inshape barrel horse is my priority. He is off of his full time round bale (he's a toad) and now I'm going to work him regularly, hopefully daily. any ideas on different exercises or schedule ideas would be appreciated! I will try to put some photos below.

I saved this quite awhile ago, don't remember if this is someone on here's workout plan or if it Sheri cervis...anyways seems like a fairly good one.

Week 1)
Day 1- 20 min walk in mild terrain
Day 2- 25 min walk in mild terrain
Day 3-30 min walk in mild terrain
Day 4- 40 min walk in mild terrain
Day 5 20 min walk with a few hills thrown in
Day 6- all day in turnout
Day 7- 30 min walk with some hills

Week 2)
Day 1- 30 min walk with hills- 2 mins long trot
Day 2- 30 mins walk- 2 mins long trot-2 mins walk- 2 mins long trot
Day 3- 30 mins walk with hills- 4 mins long trot
Day 4- 20 mins walk- 4 mins long trot- 2 mins walk- 2 mins long trot
Day 5- 30 mins walk- 6 mins long trot
Day 6- all day turnout
Day 7- 30 mins walk with hills

When I bring my back in from being turned out all winter: I ride everyday if I can't I adjust my expectations...and on a side note my horses have a decent size pasture...if stalled or in a small pen I would also extend the conditioning accordingly....
Week 1 I usually start them off with about 10 to 12 min of trotting.
Week2 bump them up to about 15 min of trotting and really making them stretch out no "dog trotting" from this point on
Week 3  15 min of trotting 5 min of loping (some basic barrel work at home)
Week 4 20 Min of trotting 10 min of loping (I would start entering most of them at the end of this week to get timing down) my extremely lazy ones I give them 2 more weeks of conditioning before I enter.
Week 5 25 min of trotting 15 min of loping
Week 6 25/30 min of trotting 15 min of loping (horses should be very close to be tapped off and running where they left off prior season) this is their regular coditioning the rest of the summer with barrel work mixed in as needed.

I am an avid long trotter, but this year I've been working with an equine sports therapist/chiropractor who runs a rehab and fitness facility nearby. She suggested continuing with the long trotting, but she also likes to see LOTS of backing up. She told me to start with 3-5 minutes a day of reverse, and work up to 15 minutes/day of reverse. We are currently at about 10 minutes 4x/week and I can see a distinct difference in my gelding's hind end.

Just curious, does a lot of backing negatively affect their hocks/joints in hind legs?
I keep thinking about something I read a long time ago about how excessively halter horses are backed each day to achieve those big butts, and it said their hocks were so shot, that they weren't sound for riding. I know halter horses are already predisposed to soundness issues due to their unnatural frames, but I'm curious what the effect is on "normal" horses.

This girl says it actually helps with hocks because it strengthens the supporting muscles and allows them and to use themselves properly. The same goes for SI... I was fully prepared to inject my gelding's SI this spring, and now it's not looking like he'll need it so I'm happy with our program so far! I will still inject hocks because they have been a problem for my gelding, but I'm happy to be saving a couple hundred on that SI injection!
