Location: Northern Ontario | I am very critical of myself and my horses. On a scale of 1-10 how athletic would you rate my mare for barrel potential from this video? I would give her a 4..... lol My coach is suppose to come out and give us lessons but she has just been too busy :( Yes, I am chasing her but she actually likes our little sessions like this(I dont do it often and this was after I rode her)

Location: North Dakota | Why do you feel she is unathletic? I think she is a pretty mover and wants to work off her hind end. She gets a little on the front and bounces but most horses do when just dinking around. Don't be too critical of her. How old is she? One of my favorite barrel horses was not very athletic at all at a young age other than he was FAST. He had a ground covering stride and blew the doors off every other horse but ask him to go anywhere other than a straight line and he would practically trip over his own feet. But when he was 7yrs old he finally matured enough and got confident in his own body. Now he is my favorite! Many people told me to give up on him but I just felt he had it in him he just needed time. |

| She looks good. Is she moving out any better under saddle or still being so laid back? |

Location: Northern Ontario | Yes, the bouncing around! She does it undersaddle and its alot of work for her to collect. she is getting better though. So its normal for a almost 4 year old to be so bouncy. also, her stride is pretty short. I do lots of long trot to help her lengthen it. Anything else I can do? |

Better some days.... she has a nice forward extended trot now, but sometimes her lope is like a western pleasure horse lol it's getting there though |

| I think she looks fine. Nothing terribly wrong or amazing. However, I don't think you can judge a horse's abilities by anything they do at liberty. I have one sitting out in the field right now that would knock your socks off at the speed he has and the promise he demonstrates when turned out in an arena. Rollbacks to die for. Big, gorgeous stride. You get him on the barrels and he magically turns into a three legged camel. I had an old mare a few years ago that you probably couldn't persuade to lope from the ground. Tiny strided, short necked, just weird in general. But you got her on the pattern and it was all you could do to hang on.
Moral of the story is you don't know what you have until you try. |

Location: Northern Ontario | Maybe she will make a barrel horse after all! We loped little 10-15 foot circles around a barrel( not on a pattern, just 3 barrels in a row) and she really pushed hard and stayed on the lope. It might just take her longer but im pretty happy with our ride yesterday |

Location: North Dakota | I think she's a very pretty girl. It's hard to tell how athletic a horse is just by watching them at liberty. To a degree you have what you have as far as talent, heart, etc. but if you keep working on teaching her to extend and collect and getting her fit, you'll maximize her potential. |

OMG I think she is beautiful and a beautiful mover. You are being really hard on her. A lot of horses bounce on their front end when being lunged like that. And remember to lope the little 10-15 foot circles you need to build her muscles up for her to do this correctly and for an extended time. Maybe try trotting them too. |
