Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm		I haven't imported any horses. But I have exported some. You will need an international health certificate and a coggins.  When exporting from the US, Canadians do need an invoice for the purchase price because they do have to pay fees but I'm not aware of any for importing from Canada.

Set up your purchase so that the Canadian owner or shipper brings horse across the border and hands it over to you or your shipper. Canada has border crossing brokers that charge a fee based on the price paid for the horse to help check paperwork etc on the horse ... .. Canadians are under less scrutiny when crossing the border into the USA by Canada's horse laws..

Same thing when selling into Canada ... if new Canadian owner or shipper can meet your American hauler in the USA .. they have no problem crossing back across the border as long as your export paperwork is rubber stamped by your states USDA vet ... this is a government vet .. costs $50-200 depending on your state ... coggins is done by your regular vet along with the export papers and then stamped by the USDA VET ..

It is also advisable to let your Canadian choose where to do the border crossing ... smaller the city at the crossing area the better ... Whether coming or going i use large truck stops close to the border as a meeting and exchange point for everyone to meet at... there is always a quiet area to load and unload to do your business safely and is one less stop for both haulers ... since everyone tops off their tanks while making the exchange ...
