Extreme Veteran Posts: 559	I have a mare that was started wrong .. No foundation at all .. So that's where the problem starts .. She was ran for 4 years with bad habits . She drops on her front end & swings her hind quarters in a turn , especially on the first barrel . On the second she's bad about dropping her shoulder & anticipating the turn , putting her in the wrong position . She has a decent foundation now .. I've put a lot of work into her , she arcs around your leg , breaks at the poll, side pass , counterpart etc . She didn't even back up when I bought her.. Now she stops & backs . She lopes pretty collected but you have to remind her to collect right .. She likes to just break at the poll & not drive from behind , but she will when you push her up . She doesn't pivot on her hind end very well but she's getting better ... She'd rather just go out of the way to dump on her front end & turn , so I constantly back her up & turn when she does that . She totally stinks at roll backs .. It's so aggravating ! I Take her to the fence at the right angle but the minute you ask her to turn around she'll find a way to not use her hind quarters ! I had her loping a decent pattern , staying round & not swinging her hind quarters but when I go to competition she runs way faster & swings them ... Basically I know the problem , she's just resorting back to her old habits when the nerves of competition come up .. She's not sore in her hocks or anything , she's been checked by a very good vet many times . Her confirmation isn't ideal however , she's chick beduino bred & has a really wide front end . Short backed too . So it is hard for her . But is there any suggestions to get her to start using her rear ! Or just keep doing what I'm doing ? I know she can do it right but I realize it's hard for her , & sometimes I wonder if I'll ever fix it completely ..

I know it's hard to not want to go fast...but I would try and keep her slow and correct even at compeititon runs to renforce doing it correctly. Have you ran her at home? How is her positioning at home at a run?

How is her positioning at home at a run? At home she is correct . But you are right . I need to make her go slow & right . I let her go her own speed in competition but that is full out .. So I guess I need to make her slow down ?

Due to conformation some horses collect naturally and /or more easily than others. Riding collected is work for the rider and the horse -- a horse needs to be in reasonably good condition to "hold" collection for periods of time. If a horse is not collecting and holding properly, I go back to the basics. It's better to be slow and correct than fast and out of control. I would stay away from barrels until the horse is riding collected in a relaxed manner and responding well - Riding a collected horse requires the rider to ride properly and use their hands, legs and seat properly -- It is a team effort. I do not hesitate to get lessons if I believe I need work on myself to help my horse.
