Hi so we all know its shedding season but one of the horses im working with is shedding alot and when it sheds it is balding in those spots. The horse is older like 21 is it because of the age or could it be lice ?

My oldie (26) did that for the last couple of years. But this year, she slicked out in no time, without any bald spots!
Also my gelding slicked out over night it seemed. I did switch both of them over to Renew Gold a couple of months ago, that might have something to do with it. Especially since I did not change my broodmare over yet (didn't want to add stress to her and the baby before foaling....) and she is not done shedding yet...... Will be changing her over next week or so... Before the baby really starts to eat grain, so he can adjust along with mom...

We have a 26 year old mare and a 6 year old gelding that completely lose their hair when they shed. The mare didn't start shedding that way until a few years ago, but the gelding has always shed that way.
We thought it may be an irritation or allergy to something we use. The vet came to see them and told us they just shed differently.
Only thing is, they will burn if it gets too hot before their hair starts growing back.

No matter the age of the horse ... when we have bad winters and horses are wearing buffalo hair ... when it turns loose it looks bald ..

Shine a flashlight on the bald spots in a dark area of your barn and you will see a jillion tiny hairs growing as you watch ... within a week colored hair will be in the bald spots ... lol

Buffalo hair....
Literally what I have thought everyday for the past two months when I looked or brushed one off!

A few years ago all my horses literally went bald all over the face, chest and back to the shoulder region. We had a crazy cold winter and then as if someone flipped a switch it was 80 degrees. The only thing my vet and I could figure out was that it was the drastic temp change. They checked out fine for lice, parasites, fungus and we evaluated their feed and everything was good. Hasn't happened since.
