Extreme Veteran Posts: 338 Location: NE TX	Took her to get palpated 2 days ago to make sure everything is going good in there cause she came into RAGING heat about 3 weeks ago and then since about once or twice a week is still peeing and winking while being ridden. I've owned her for almost 2 years and last spring she did NOT do this. She just turned 7 so this is not her first cycle. Vet did say everything was fine 2 days ago and that she should be coming into heat in the next 7-10 days, but last night took her to a function and when I opened the trailer to unload her she was peeing while exiting the trailer, then when I was warming her up she had her tail held to the side like she does when she's in heat, she was whipping her tail around while being ridden during her barrel run but didn't pee that we noticed. When she went to make her pole run however she was peeing and winking all over the place. When she gets like that its almost impossible to get her to do anything, all she is focused on is peeing and doing the opposite of what you ask her to do. Had a friend tell me that I needed to start her on apple cider vinegar and needed to get her sewn up and that it would help keep her from acting like such a witchy mare. Have any of you done either of these and has it helped? Trying to decide what to do cause she is such a good horse and is SO easy to ride when she isn't being moody. Thanks in advance!!!!

Elite Veteran Posts: 974 Location: USA	It helps if they suck air and that can cause pain which can turn them witchy, but regarding hormonally, a caslick doesn't do anything. ACV never helped with my mares cycles either. I started her on an herbal mix and that's helped TREMENDOUSLY.

Just trying to see if anyone has any suggestions as to what may help keep her from winking and peeing on everything while she isn't supposed to be in heat. Dreamingofcans: What her mix are you using? I'm willing to try anything at this point!

Coyote Country Queen Posts: 5666	Sounds like maybe she's in transition, which causes them to appear to be going in and out of heat even though they aren't actually cycling yet. An other cause could be a leutenized follicle or persistent CL. Did your vet mention anything about either of these? I use to own a mare that would get a persistent CL and she was constantly in a standing heat, winking, urinating, etc. A shot of lutalyse set her cycle straight and she was fine. This seemed to happen with her during transition in the spring and fall. Honestly, what I've found to work the best with my current mare is to keep her on Regumate. My mare was having ovary issues that caused her to be painful. I tried an injectable but did not get consistent results. My mare had no issues while on Regumate.

Namesless in BHW Posts: 10368 Location: At the race track with Ah Dee Ohs	Every mare should have caslicks done. If she is not done, I would recommend you do that.
