I am using an inch 20guage needle. I have some I give in the pec muscle and a couple others that are better about shots that get it in the neck.  For IV I have better luck with a 1 1/2" needle.

I use 18 x 1 1/2 for IM.  18 x 1 for IV.

If you haven't given needles much, I suggest speaking with your vet about size, location, and gauge of needle.

I use different gauge and length of needle depending on what drug I am giving

22 gage is small

18 gauge is big I don't even use that when I have to administer penicillin, but will use it to draw penicillin up as it is faster.

I like using a 20g 1 1/2" for shots such as your doing. Anything thick I use a 18g 1 1/2"  but would rather push long and slow with a 19g. if they will stand for it otherwise I use the big (ouch) 18 g. For a horse needing lots of shots via IV I use a 22g so that I won't develop vein issues. (Rodeo horse using lasix).
If I'm hanging a bag on them I almost always use a 16g 2" so that my cath holds position  (getting the fluids in quickly) and I don't waste my vitamins.
Like someone said, get with your vet or someone from the veterinary medical field and have them go over the correct locations and needle/cath options for the medication and the route.

Not wanting to steal the thread.... But are all needles created equally?  I need a bunch of 25G x 5/8" (atleast that's what my allergy kit came with) needles and 1mL syringes but I can't get them at TSC or Atwoods.  If I order them online from a human meds place is that still acceptable for equine use?

I put it in a different place every time.  Butt, neck, pectoral.   As for size, I use a 22 gauge 1.5" for things like Pentosan and Adequan.  Thick concoctions or IV, I use an 18 or 20.

usually 1.5" for IM and 1" for IV. when you use a 1.5" IV you run the risk of hitting the carotid more. But honestly if you do it wrong you can hit the carotid with a 1" needle.

If you want to draw up penicillin faster, use slip tip syringes and shove the hole slip tip into the rubber part of the bottle with no needle at all. it will draw up really easy that way. Same for Exceed Abx. I use an 18 gauge for those thick drugs because they are so hard to push through a smaller needle. I also redirect 2 or 3 times so I don't put the whole dose in one spot.

For less viscous drugs a 20 gauge is usually good enough- banamine, dex, adequan, etc...

22gauge needles are pretty small which makes it harder to push drugs through, but we use those a lot for nerve blocks.

and 25g needles are really small but we will use those for really particular blocks or with smaller delicate structures.

Remember it is highly vascular and a lot of nerves go through you can hit and cause nerve damage acute and permanent

We use mostly 20x1 for IM and 18x1 for IV where I work. I work at a vet clinic though, so...not sure.
