       Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | How do you avoid having a sore "seat" from riding when you're a thin guy?
I've been teaching my step son to ride and he's getting sore. He's finally learning how to post - which will help some I'm sure - but he was getting sore just walking too.
He's an adult.

     Location: Do I hear Banjos? | Possibly teach him to put a bit of weight onto his feet in the stirrups. Not all should be on those pelvic bones. I have a bit of a thinly padded rear...I'm a girl...but physics are the same. And...the more he rides the more he will get used to it and not get sore. |

              Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I have no butt, so I do lots of posting when the need fits. I keep alot of my weight in the stirrups when I just do alot of walking and loping/running. I hate that my butt bones rud's, I can feel them rolling as I ride and it dont feel to good. |

As much as I wanted him to keep the weight out of his stirrups and learn to ride the right way, it hurt him too much, so we adapted and I let him put as much weight in his stirrups as he needed and left it alone. 6 years later he can ride one just fine. Just took time to get used it. What kind of jeans is he wearing? |

| I'm 6'1 and 180lbs - not super thin - about average. I will say that I haven't ridden in years and starting back I've had my fair share of sore spots in places that never sees the sun! lol... If riding for longer periods of time at a walk I shift my weight around as much as possible (not hanging off the side of the horse) and I will shift some weight to my stirrups for a period just to get relief in other places. It's been about 6 months and my skin is starting to get a little thicker in places that it wasn't before and I notice the more time I put in the saddle the less pain there is. So, to sum it up - tell him to suck it up butter cup - it gets easier. :) |

  Location: Abbotsford B.C. Canada | Just getting an old english saddle restuffed or repaired in the seat. My seat bones were literally wearing down the seat of the saddle. So us skinny giys do not have natures padding added. I have been called "pin assed" like a Coriente roping steer.
I think we just do not have the padding so I suggest trying a cycling shop about padded undershorts or even just padded cycling shorts they use, to put under jeans. It probably is time to get a different saddle for him with plenty of padding or restuff the one you have. A seat cover may help but that adds more bulk and may reduce the grip.
Invest in a good saddle that has more padding. I have a ranch saddle and the saddle maker who made it (a very experienced old time saddle maker) told me working cowboys really appreciated some padding after spending all day range riding. He made saddles for "real" cowboys who worked the bigger ranches. The old hard seats are killers after a while.
Men also have a wider pelvic hip area than women so he will not fit a saddle that will fit a woman even if the weight is not that much different or the hieght is not that much different. Women need a narrower twist.
I have another saddle I used for roping and one buddy of mine loved it because it fit him just right and had a nice padded seat. He was very slim. We need grip for roping but the padding really helped make things comfortable for me and did not seem to create any issues with riding or grip or bulk etc.
Talk to a saddle maker and maybe you can get a good second hand one that is a heck of a lot more comfortabble. People tell me they think I ride a lot about 3-4 hours trail riding every second day, (not really a lot compared to the working range riders I knew) but I can tell you I love the padding I got in the saddle thanks to the saddle makers advice. I do not rope anymore but used my old roping saddle yesyerday and it is still great.

| I'm a guy, about 6ft, 165lbs, and basically no butt. If I don't wear a belt, my pants will fall off just standing there. The only time I have issues with being sore back there is if I am working cows all day. But just going to races on the weekends and riding my 1-2 hours everyday exercising horses, I never seem to have a problem. Sometimes I also wear 2 pairs of underwear to add a little extra padding when I know I'm going to be sitting in the saddle a lot that day. Seems to help some, and also keeps everything up front in place better to avoid the risk of smashing anything. LOL |
