Location: Oklahoma | What do you guys do for them? She seems to get this cough in Spring/Summer the last couple of years. Had her checked for a lung infection and nothing, but she had blisters in her throat. Vet said allergies. Put her on Vitamin C and also a daily antihistamine/expectorant. Didn't help at all. Some days she would have thick clear snot hanging out of her nose. I went ahead and did a round of antibiotics but didn't change. Finally got some oral Dex (steroid) which seemed to help quite a bit. *Now the cough is back, no snot yet thankfully. I have borrowed an Equiresp and used it 3 times last week, I did not hear her cough for an entire week. Then yesterday she is coughing again. |

Location: Oklahoma | What exactly is in the allergy shots? Seems like I had a horse several years ago that got one, but it wasn't continuous. |

| There is a wart like virus that can attack the trachea, and it looks like blisters
I would find a good equine vet specializing in respiratory to rule out the rare but horrible diseases.
Snotty nose especially out of one nostril can be guttural pouch
How was she checked for lung infection, did the vet scope, did he scope the bronchials as not many vets can actually do this I am told, most will scope to the beginning of the lung, not into the lung.
Also did the vet do a bronchial lavage and send it for culture? |

| If you're thinking allergies your vet can draw blood and send it off for testing. We just got the results back on mine - GOOD MONEY SPENT.
His cough was minor over the winter/early spring - a couple times at the beginning of a ride and he was good.
Mid spring it got bad. Couldn't trot or lope without coughing.
Scoped. Irritation, some mucous, vet said IAD. 10 days of clenbuterol, minimize dust. 48 hours after the last dose the cough was back.
We drew blood. Holy moly. Allergic to most grass hay's - in mid spring when it got bad, we ran out of alfalfa and had to buy grass hay. Our regular feed is pellets is a "roughage product base" per the label, so even when he was on alfalfa, his grain was likely the source of the minor cough.
Also allergic to some pollen's and apparently most flies and mosquitoes. We are doing the shots since we can't control those things. We have him back on alfalfa and I've changed his grain over to one that has none of his allergens in it. I can tell it's already getting better just in a week.
I would also say that this is not the first time this horse had been on grass hay, and he's never appeared to be overly reactive to bugs. BUT we treated him for EPM last fall and last summer is when we started to have these issues. It makes me wonder if there's not a connection. |

Dr. White tested Feisty for me. It cost $160 and we found out that she's allergic to wool and soy mostly. We changed her saddle pad and put her on an alfalfa diet and it helped her tremendously without having to give her any shots. She didn't cough though, she was just itchy all the time and would roll on my saddles! |

| I have 2 horses that have the same problem. Our hay isn't dusty either. They both coughing when riding and they also have snotty noses. We've tried Platinum and Animal Element supplements, but nothing seems to make a difference. The Animal Element might help a little more than the Platinum, but we still don't get any relief. I'm going to check into more allergy testing. I'm not sure who does it in our area. |
