What does everyone think of cowbred horses? Does anyone have anything with Haidas Little Pep breeding?
I just picked up a mare with Doc O Lena on top, & Haidas Little Pep on the bottom. She seems great so far, my only concern is she's about 14-14.1 and I'm about 5'10 lol.
What are their styles like? I can see her getting real hot if she's blown up.

If she gets hot, it is not her bloodlines to be to blamed.
The best cow bred horses that have step foot on our ranch have been Peppy San Badger and Doc O Lena. I love her papers, so much I would potentially buy her sight-unseen. She should be a GREAT working mare and would throw amazing colts if bred to a High Brow or Pepto stud.

Peppy babies are generally very stout with a big hip. I would not expect her to get 15 hands at all.

Wouldn't blame the bloodlines at all...just could see her being a hot mess if in the wrong hands. She is a cute little thing...and gritty as heck. She was sweet as pie when I tried her, didn't give me any trouble at all...then I looked into her mouth & found the biggest hooks I've ever seen! I wouldn't have blamed her if she has pitched me off. She's 8 now so I don't see her growing any more LOL. I jokingly refer to her as my midget, even though I have a mini donkey.

She's got a great build...but she looks awful now. She came from KY and she's at least 100 lbs under weight. I found pictures from her old ad and she looks amazing there...can't wait to get her back to looking like a well fed horse.

She's a Great Granddaughter of both Doc O Lena & HLP...Haidas Little Poke is her grandsire. I would love to see her crossed on a HBC stallion!

I have a granddaughter of Hollywood Dun It and out of a Bueno Chex mare. Couldn't cut it as a reiner so she's my barrel horse now. Gritty. Hot. Athletic. Can stand up in bad ground. Short (14.2 and I'm also 5'10''.... I call her my Super Shetland).

How was yours to pattern? Her previous owners patterned her, but from the video I saw they did a poor job...just hoping shes not the kind to "show her once and that's how they remember it" type.

One of my closest friends has a HLP son. Gorgeous chromed up chestnut stud. They're cutters, so that's where all of their own foals have headed. However, some outside mares were bred with barrels in mind. There is a barrel racing family in our area that bred a nice running mare to him two years ago, and the filly is huge hipped and gorgeous. Their hope is that he would add the butt/rate to her run, and it sure looks that way! They are very excited over her. His babies have all been super smart and catch on quickly. Very business minded also. I'm jealous of your find----really want to breed my son's barrel mare to Haida, but cant make myself do it yet. (I know nothing about breeding or babies!) Good luck and I bet she's a gem

My neighbor had an own son of Peppy San Badger, he came off the 6666 ranch...just passed this winter at the age of 34. Even in his last years, he was a gritty son of a gun...she reminds me of him a lot. That sounds like a gorgeous baby though! I'm very excited about her...I can't take credit for finding her. My good friend was picking up horses in TN/KY & she picked her up and sold her to me lol!

His babies are gritty too. Of course my experience is with them on cows, but I've seen them where I swear you can see it cross their mind like "that d-mn cow isn't getting past me" And it doesn't cause they bear down and that's the end of it.

HLP horses are gritty - I rode an own daughter last year at a sorting while my own horse was recovering.  NICE movers, smooth, and gritty doesn't begin to cover their determination.

I do believe in the wrong hands, on can blow their minds easily.  As long as you stay calm and focused they will excell with ya.

Good Luck!!

My sisters HLP horse is awesome, we absolutey love him. I will say in the wrong hands he would have been blown up. He is not a horse you can pick  on and he knows his job and wants to do it. Very catty and super athletic.

He looks a lot like my mare-they have similar faces and blazes! Is he pretty easy going as long as you stay quiet with him?

We have a Doc O Lena grandaughter that goes to Pacific Bailey on the bottomside.  She is very thick and about 15.1.  Her babies are the first to sell every year.  When we go into Cheyenne for the mare and baby race we take this mare because she is so gentle and layed back the kids can handle her with no problem.  The last couple by our Tres Seis son have just been outstanding. This dirty, hairy colt, shown as a yearling was bought by the 'Marlboro Man's'grandaughter and I think she will futurity him.  There are alot of the cow lines I'd stay sway from because they are just too flighty for me, but Doc O Lena isn't one of them :)

Yes, he is very easy going as long as you just ride and do your job. He likes light hands and a centered rider. Heavy hands wouldn't  work with him at all. Very smart and willing but wouldnt take being man handled. Great fun personality!

Wow what a chunk! Such a pretty baby! I've never had one with Doc O Lena so close...she is so sweet and easy going but she has such a great work ethic! What's a mare & baby race?

I love them. I have this stud and ALL of his babies are so good. I get compliments from all the foal owners or anyone who knows my guys. I only breed a few foals a year and now I won't sell any I hoard them, but I have a wait list for them if I do.

I like to cross him on a run/cow or straight run.
