There have been several topics about horse for sale ads on here. They all ranged from funny ads, dishonest sellers, what to put in an ad, etc. But my question/request is that I (who most would call a non-horse person) need help translating what all the talk in the ad means. This is not meant to step on anyone’s toes. This is an sincere post looking for more information. Such as…..

No cheat….

Gorgeous…..

Finished…..but all videos are of the horse loping the pattern.

1D/2D/3D/4D…..is this the same in WI as it is in TX as it is in FL?

Needs an experienced rider, but would be great with a novice…..what?

Ton of feel…

Great step up horse……step up to what from what?

2D/3D horse would make a good HS/college horse…….can a 2D/3D horse make a good HS/college horse? And is a good HS horse a good college horse?

Speed index….guess that is for horses off the track.

Well started….

Depending on rider horse can be a xD horse…… is not almost all horse performance not based in part on rider?

1D youth/2D open….. ½ the events I go to a youth wins the event, and the last 4 events we went to were 400-500 riders.
Pretty mane….does this help?

Horse will stop hard….. video shows horse bouncing on the front end to stop.

Great potential…… horse is 10y. When do horses reach their potential?

And the list goes on. I wish I knew someone who could help evaluate all these ads for me. I have found some horses I think would be great, but how do you know? Also, what makes a good beginner, youth, JH, HS, college, open, pro horse? What is required to win at each of these levels from both horse and rider?

Most ads are sales talk....you can only believe half of what you read....to be safe and sure of a purchase, I would go look in person, ride the horse and see for yourself if he has a "ton of feel"...lol....and be sure you watch the horse perform a few times in competition equal to what you will be running in....don't buy sight unseen, don't take anyone's word for what the horse is...see for yourself and VET CHECK....and take your time...you gotta kiss a lot of frogs along the way because you will try a lot of junk, and then they will call you a tire kicker...lol....

Probably not much help here, but I agree with Cindy, and when I advertise my own I like to stick with just the facts. Specs, credentials, etc. I don't like to go saying who I think the horse would be good for or not. I like to put all the facts out there, maybe say a thing or two that I like about the horse, such as if he lopes around really nice or walks flat footed in the gate, or is a gentleman on the ground, but I think it is silly to go describing the next perfect owner for the horse. Watch the videos, come ride him and make your own opinion. If it is a good fit, then you'll know it. Now if someone asks me if I think my horse would be suited for such and such person, I will try my best to answer, but it is super hard to know what all those subjective terms mean, exactly.

And I've learned if you are looking at horses on craigslist and the title reads "awesome, beautiful, majestic," etc.... they are never such things! Haha gotta love craigslist!

No cheat….
Honest, not lazy (supposedly...)

Gorgeous…..
Good conformation, coloring, etc.
Finished…..but all videos are of the horse loping the pattern.
LIES! Or has a beginner rider and no videos of someone better riding.

1D/2D/3D/4D…..is this the same in WI as it is in TX as it is in FL?
Highly subjective. The size of the show and territory makes a HUGE difference. I have one horse that can win youth 1D locally, but is a 3-4D horse at state shows. Ask for competition records.
Needs an experienced rider, but would be great with a novice…..what?
That makes no sense. Run.

Ton of feel…
They're soft, supple, and responsive in their body/mouth. Which is good.

Great step up horse……step up to what from what?
Again, this is highly subjective sales talk. Usually they mean that if you were riding a 4D beginner friendly horse and ready to move up to something faster and so on.

2D/3D horse would make a good HS/college horse…….can a 2D/3D horse make a good HS/college horse? And is a good HS horse a good college horse?
Only if you don't want to win. It has to depend on how tough your college/hs competition is. In some places, TX for example, you're going to need a good 1D horse if you want to be competitive.

Speed index….guess that is for horses off the track.
Yes higher number=faster
Well started….

Depending on rider horse can be a xD horse…… is not almost all horse performance not based in part on rider?
Yes, it is based partly on the rider but natural ability is hugely important. For example, I have one horse that will slow down and carry a beginner rider  and place in the 4D, but if you're more aggressive of a rider he can be a 2D horse.
1D youth/2D open….. ½ the events I go to a youth wins the event, and the last 4 events we went to were 400-500 riders.
Youth division is usually less competitive because kids are in general still much more novice. Therefore, a horse that is quiet and fast enough to place in the Youth might only be fast enough to place in the 2D in open competition.
Pretty mane….does this help?
Well I like pretty manes. It doesn't make a lick of difference to most people.

Horse will stop hard….. video shows horse bouncing on the front end to stop.
A hard stop and a good stop are not always the same thing.
Great potential…… horse is 10y. When do horses reach their potential?
At 10 they should have pretty much hit their friggin potential. I won't buy a "prospect" over the age of 6.
Also, what makes a good beginner, youth, JH, HS, college, open, pro horse? What is required to win at each of these levels from both horse and rider?
Good beginner/youth horses are going to be well trained, quiet, and consistent but usually aren't as fast. Rodeo horses are rodeo horses, no matter whether it's HS or Pro. You want one that is fast and sturdy enough to compete at the level you want and has a proven competition results. Making sure they mesh with you is also hugely important. All the speed in the world isn't going to do you any good if the horse is crazy or their style doesn't blend with you.
I've read about 4 million sales ads and have gotten pretty darn good at interpreting them so feel free to PM me if you want a second opinion on ads.
