I was gonna say get her a child, before you put conditions on it.

Hehehe! This made me laugh!!

I used to have a mini donkey. She was of course an easy keeper but otherwise a total PITA. I donated her to a reputable petting zoo in the area. Won't ever have another. Now she gets petted and scratched all day and just eats it up! My mare does great on her own (we do have a big dog who's massive yard is adjacent to two of her fields, and they're buddies....I think, lol)

You could get a llama! LOL. I had only two horses for several years. Even though I've added a few more to the heard, the younger one is still a PITA when it comes to the other mare. If she can't see her...she freaks!

I don't want to hijack your thread, but I too am interested. I have 3 horses. 2 mares that I take to shows, and 1 permanently retired gelding. Up until a few weeks ago, I had a friend's horse here that kept him company when I took the girls to a show. However, the friend took her horse back to her house, so now my gelding is left alone. Do horses like goats?

Some horses like goats others want to eat them, for instance, I have a gelding that loves my goat he scratched her back they graze side by side. they are in seperate pastures but I let the goat out every now and then for weed control. On the other hand I have a friends horse here that hates anything smaller than him, calves, goats, pigs, dogs, ect. he tries to toss and stomp them. It would depend on your horses personality. obviously make a small pen at first and slowly introduce.

What do you recommend for when the horse gets so attached to the owner that when the owner leaves the horse goes nuts and frets?

All horses need a companion and a human is not a herd animal, I think all horses need some kind of another animal for a companion, like a goat, cow, another horse something they can hang out with.

Best thing we ever did was invest in a mini pony for my daughters mare. He keeps her quiet and calm. She leaves him with no problem because my daughter is then with her. That pony went to 7 states last year. We haul them in a 3 horse slant loose. Away from home he stays in stalls or a portable pen with her. She could care less about him at home. But on the road, he is her security blanket and she is a mess without him.

I have a mini mare for my gelding. She keeps him quiet, she's well behaved and smart as a whip...not diabolical-pony-smart though, more like sensible-horse-smart. Sometimes she seems to have more solid wits than my drama queen gelding. I keep her on the same farrier, worming, etc schedule as my gelding and I spend time working with her so she's good on the ground, easy to catch and all that. I got her because I wasn't sure if he'd bond with a goat and I didn't want to listen to a mini donkey.

And she's adorable

My mare has 5 sheep to hang out with. They huddle by her when it's raining and she just loves them, it's really cute!

That makes no sense. It's impossible for a human to provide herd-like companionship unless you're planning on quitting your job and living with them. If you work a normal 8 hours a day, that's 8 hours the animal is completely alone, even if you spent every non-working hour with them, and I'm assuming most people aren't planning on sleeping with their horse at night on a regular basis.

Oh my gosh, that is so funny! My mare HATES sheep...not hates, is TERRIFIED OF THEM! Like, "Are they gonna eat me? Omigosh, omigosh, omigosh!!!" LOL

Do goats really work? I'd really like to know! Or what IS the best companion animal...I may need one!

I recommend an add-on to the living-room... and a safe place to keep your apples and carrots..
