Am I the only one who gets a killer headache after I make a competitive run?? It almost makes me feel lightheaded a sick at my stomach. Never happens at small shows or during a practice run....

I really don't get freaked out or super nervous, or at least don't feel like I do. And when I come out I'm good, til the headache hits! Takes about 30 minutes and getting cooled down and it goes away

Too much pressure in your head? How is your blood pressure? Do you ever have pain or pressure from bending over?

Do you breathe during your runs? If I forget to breathe when I run I leave the alley with a head rush

I just started lifting weights since high school and I am getting headaches. My chiro told me I am not breathing and she was right. The next time I lifted I made sure to breathe - no more headache.

My guess is you are not breathing. Try some breathing exercises before you go in to make a run and maybe even talk to yourself or your horse during your run.

Great post - I've had this problem too! I read this on the way to a rodeo last night and tried to focus on breathing before and when I ran and I didn't get a headache!

I've been known to pass out after runs. It's a breathing thing and also to do with the pressure in your head. I have high blood pressure, and it makes me SICK to run. I used to have to get off the second I ended a run and sit down, because I would black out or get nauseous. I know better now to never eat or drink an hour before my run, because I will lose whatever is in my stomach if there is anything.

It's a lot better now that I have a routine before a run. I still get a massive headache, but I can usually stay on the horse for longer than 5 seconds after a run. I still feel sick afterwards, but it has a lot to do with that I'm not very healthy anyways, so the adrenaline just amps it up.

Boy its a good thing that you wear a helmet if you pass out after a run, that just sounds really scary.

I've never fallen off, I would just slump over and my friends would pull me off the horse, but It usually would only last about 5 seconds then I would come to again. It was pretty scary the first time, but I can usually feel it coming now and get my bearings about me enough to stay on. I have a really good horse who takes good care of me though.

sounds strange but next big race, sing the ABC's or row your boat. Something easy to sing. It's probably a compilation of stressing yourself, not breathing while you run, and the stress running your horse puts on your body. I get similar headaches when I'm exercising and I don't breathe correctly or enough.

I will definitely try anything, because the headache afterwards is HORRIBLE!!! Its so good to know im not the only one doing this....last weekend i ran and immediately got a headache so i took some Excedrin Migraine, 20-30 mins later it was gone, but as soon as i ran my next horse it came back. Thank you all for the advice!!

I have a bad habit of not eating anything before I run. So if I don't run till 6:00 PM... I haven't eaten all day. As soon as I run and exit the pen, I feel like I'm going to pass out and my stomach is in knots. I think it's nerves and lack of food/water.

I would work on the breathing everyone else is mentioning. And if you consistently get a headache, why not take the excedrin twenty minutes before your run so if the headache comes it doesn't hit you too hard.

If the excedrin worked, take it a 20-30 minutes before you run, as posted above. Excedrin also makes a stress headache formula that might work well for you also. Also, another thing i haven't seen mentioned (maybe i missed it) - Have you had an adjustment done by a chiropractor lately? I get debilitaing headaches after a run if my neck is out of alignment. Best of luck to you finding the solution! We search and search for solutions to our horses pain issues, we should all be doing the same for ourselves.
