My mare at some point last week sustained a puncture abscess to the bar area of her hind hoof. She was never lame and I did NOT know about it until my farrier found it. My farrier was out last Wesdnesday. He was trimming her foot and opened it up. It bled for a while pretty good. Anyways he packed it with betadine and gauze and I was to change it on Thursday. I did. But when I pulled the wrap off I saw a pencil eraser size piece of soft tissue sticking out of the abscess track in the sole. My horses was sooooo sensitive when I touched it. She was sound at first when the abscess was opened but with this soft tissue hanging out, she did not want to put weight down.  Anyways I called my vet and my farrier and they said it is the soft tissue under the sole, called the sole corium, sticking out. It prolapsed through the abscess hole because the drain track was deep and there was no support of sole left. I have been packing it with sugardine, and an animalintex poultice pad. I have easy Rx boots I am keeping her in.  I have no idea how long this is going to take to heal.  It is NOT draining anymore since the first day.... I am just waiting for what ever is supposed to happen to this soft tissue to heal.... has anyone delt with this type of abscess with the sole corium sticking out? How long did it take to heal and what did you do to treat it?

I just bought some magic cushion today to pack in the bar area where the proplapsed corium and abscess track is....

I just wanted to wish you good luck & tell you to hang in there. My 2yo just had a very deep abscess, and when the vet dug out the hole he was terribly lame for 6 wks. He is almost completely sound now . It takes time to allow the sole to grow back in & harden up. He didn't have the soft tissue prolapse, but it was very deep ' & large hole. I imagine that the prolapse is because of the location (there is tremendous bar pressure). The hardest thing for us was keeping it clean & dry during the monsoon-like weather that we have had this spring. He also had some issues from being stall bound for over a month. I would recommend ulcer prevention if you haven't already started that. Prayers for you both!

Thanks... ugh. Yes it is so frustrating. The good news with my mare is even though the sole corium is exsposed, she is finally sound. She has been sound since Sunday. I have her in the easy boots in a grassy paddock. I know what you mean though with all the rain. It's horrible. If I didn't have this grassy area. She'd be in a stall.
