Miss Southern Sunshine Posts: 7427 Location: South Central Florida	This is pretty much what my vet told me back in 2004 when we had our first bleeder. She was very fit, but did not bleed visually until she had really started winning. It seemed that extra half second or less was the difference. The horse we have now went through the same type thing. She didn't bleed visually until after she went from placing, to winning. The first mare had a lung infection by the time we figured out what was wrong because she actually never bleed outwardly. She coughed one day and blew brown/black coffee ground looking gewwww all over the wall of the trailer. Scoped her and the blood was very old (poor thing, we were still running her). She was on antibiotics and Vent. He preferred Ventapulman but honestly I can't really afford it all the time. The Lasix was and is cheaper, but in the summer when it's really hot here in Florida, we do use vent if the race is during the day. I have heard people talk about ventipulman as a performance enhancing thing, but I have not really noticed any difference with it or with out it. She seems to breath easier with the vent, and recovers more quickly. . . that's about it. My question for the original poster...when you took the horse back and let it rest then ran it again and it did not bleed, did you scope it? Or just note that it did not bleed outwardly? I do tell people with horses that have symptoms just because you didn't see it bleed outwardly, doesn't mean it didn't bleed. I have seen many many treatments but have never seen a bleeder, NOT be a bleeder after time off. Only thing I am not sure about in the first post. Maybe it's because of where I am from but I see successful treatments and products that make the bleeding controled, but never seen one go with nothing and not bleed.

Ive have always wondered with the increase in bleeders if it was truely because there were more horses that bled or if it was something we were or were not doing. Ive always believed in fitness and dont feel that a horse can really get fit in an arena. I also think that with everyones obsession with supplements, that maybe over supplementation may be a cause. Now im not saying that there arent horses out there that dont have a physical issue that causes bleeding, Im just saying in my opinion there are many horses out there who are treated as one that arent. I have seen several horses who ran for years without a problem no hidden signs or symptoms of bleeding and they go to a new owner and now they are a bleeder. It just makes me question what people are doing or not doing.
