I've started on a new fitness program which involves lifting 4 days out of the week. my hands hurt so bad it's beginning to get frustrating. I can't get myself to muscle failure because my hands fail before I can even get to a max repetition or max weight. It's all joint pain, not building callouses or anything(horses have blessed me with man hands in the first place.) it starts from the middle knuckle and radiates down to the middle of my palms. any solutions?

I wonder if my vet can give me injections ;)

When I was younger I worked out with weights.

I would buy some Tommie Copper gloves. I bought a pair of the fingerless and that has taken away hand pain I was having.

I do, and the worst time I've had this problem is with trying to rope climb. My hands fail long before my arms. Get one of the grip weights, and use that - and also try back on track gloves. Grip strength in your hands is a beast all its own, that's for sure.

Sounds like you may have a touch of arthritis or maybe even carpal tunnel syndrome. Try taking some aleve before your workout and see if it helps. If it does maybe try a good glucosamine supplement. You have to give it time to work if you decide to go that way. Good luck!

 I started lifting weights 5-6 days a week two years ago with the hopes of earning an IFBB card.  When I started, I would develop pain within the center ligament of my palm  (transverse carpal).   I notice that this still happens every so often when I increase my weight too quickly or I lag on my nutrition.   

Are you lifting too heavy? My trainer told me I should be increasing weight every 3-6 workouts (per body part). In other words, if you train specific, but different muscle groups every day of your workout week,  increase weight every 3-6 weeks.  

 Also, make sure you are eating (not a snack, but a meal) before your workout (ex. 3-4 ounces of low-sat protein and 4-5 of a slow digesting carb) and also be sure to drink a good quality protein powder within 30 minutes after finishing your workout. Finally, eat another meal 45 minutes after you finish your workout.    I noticed a major decrease in both general soreness and palm pain after I changed the structure of my routine and my nutrient intake.   The glutamine in the protein powder will also help you if you are tearing any muscle within your hands (works great with next day soresness after getting thrown too!).  You can also try wearing gloves.  The good ones will help with your form and help if your weights tend to slip with a poor grip.  Also make sure you are stabilizing your wrists.

I've never lifted weights but I do a lot of manual labor and I have very toned arms and upper body.  Pitching crap, carrying buckets of feed and throwing idiot blocks.

Just an FYI...I actually will sleep with my Tommie Copper gloves on at night to take the pain out as needed. I don't know if they would be any good to use when you are actually lifting.

Do not get discouraged! Stay with it! You may need to modify it and that's fine. Let your body tell you what you need. If it's too much on you that day, go work abs, legs, or more cardio.

Thanks for all of the advice! I took an unplanned rest day today since my horse showed up 3 legged lame today. If it isn't one thing, it's the next!

ETA: sticking with my nutrition plan, high protein and plenty of carbs! I'm trying to find that healthy balance of listening to my body but still pushing myself to do more or do it better!

I have found that the more I walk, the less pain I have in my knee that I've been told by 3 ortho doctors that it needs to get replaced but I listen to my body and take it easy when my body tells me to slow down. Sucks getting old. Tommie Copper products have been a God send for me. I don't take pain meds. I just put on some Tommie Copper.

I have the TC knee sleeve and that is a God send on its own! will probably put an order out soon on gloves! I'm thinking arthritis could be a possible answer. I've been a knuckle cracker since I was a little kid, then tack on texting and working on a computer all day I'm surprised I have fingers left!
