| This isn't barrel related, but was hoping for some help. We have been back and forth about buying my husband a bigger horse. He has been riding this horse for the last two years. The horse has never showed any signs of soreness riding (besides when my hubby's saddle wasn't fitting properly), but he does get fatigued a bit faster. He also have some arthritis in his hocks, will be trying him on adequan in the next couple weeks. The horse is just shy of 15 hands, taped by the vet at 1250 pounds.. He could really stand to loose 100 lbs though. My husband is 6'3" 215 pounds. We are just trail riding, but do some rough steep trails at times.

| I've always heard a horse can carry 20% of its weight. Your husband doesn't look too big on the horse to me.
If the horse gets tired easily, is it a fitness issue? |

| Yea he probably is out of shape. If you went by the horse's ideal weight then he'd be over the 20% when you include his saddle. |

Location: "...way down south in the Everglades..." | If he likes the horse I say it's fine. I agree with conditioning. Not sure how old the horse is either? My SO is 6'4", 200 and rides our 15 hand gelding who's not even close to as stocky. Works for us. |

Location: Willows, CA | Looks like the horse packs him easy enough. I am huge. 6'7" and weigh 260. Having always had cutters, I really don't like big horses because, in general, they are simply not as handy. I typically ride a horse that is 15 or 15.1 hands, (that is pretty big for todays cutting horses). I am into conditioning, so that has never been a problem for me. Even with the weight of a 16 1/2" saddle my horses pack me with ease. I do think that my size does limit me on horses smaller than 15 hands and I don't ride really "little" horses, which most cutters are. I do think that a fit Quarter Horse with proper conformation that is close to 15 hands tall should not have a problem with your SO. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I agree with everyone else. Horse is just out of shape is all. Very nice horse.
My SO is over 6 foot as well. Built like a linebacker. However, He's convinced he needs a draft horse before he rides with me. (HAAAA!) I'm convinced I need to be rich before I try and feed another horse, much less a draft. LOL I need to show him your pics so he'll get off the draft horse kick.... |

| Everytime I go to a roping or a cutting event, it's always these giant guys on these tiny horses. Nobody seems to mind. There's also a few barrel racers out here that are way past ideal and they still win. |

I have 2 horses that seem to get fatigued more than the others do. I've noticed they loose condition quicker and just don't have the air that the others do. I've put them on some DMG and so far it does seem to be helping. They don't get as fatigued as easily. Flax helps too. |

| Well we found out why he might be getting fatigued a bit faster that was is normal for him. Noticed he has been huffing on and off rapidly, we thought at first it was just him out of shape but decided to have the vet take a look. He has some noise on expiration. Vet suggested an expectorant. Any good suggestions for one? |

Yup, I have lost over 30 pounds in the last month but I'm a stout guy. Will NEVER be 130-140 like the little barrel racing guys, but when I am in great shape I'm about 190-200 and I have 2 tough 1D horses. |
