Two South American polo horse breeders had two Storm Cat clones foaled this spring. Unfortunately one just recently died in a paddock accident. They intend to raise polo horses from the surviving clone. The Young family, owners of deceased Storm Cat, are co owners. Since the Jockey Club is much stricter on rules governing TB registration none of the clone's foals will be eligible for registration in the TB association. Clones in polo horses have had more success than in other modalities. The most successful polo horse clone sold for $800,00.00 and was raised by the Storm Cat clone owners. The clone was foaled in South Carolina.

I love reading about the other "worlds" of horses. Sometimes you forget that there isn't just barrel horses :) The polo world has always been very interesting and it is even more so down in South America!

That's what I was thinking! Storm Cat is known for bad attitudes and crooked legs, why clone him???

That didn't really clear anything up. Storm Cat babies ARE known for having a nasty temperament and crooked legs. If the entire point of cloning is to continue to duplicate certain genetics, Storm Cat would not be my first pick of TB stallions. No one is criticizing, it's pretty much a fact and anyone even remotely involved in the TB racing industry would tell you Storm Cat's are known for being mean.

They aren't criticizing cloning, just cloning him. He has awful conformation and has an awful attitude (that is passed on to his foals!). Polo people don't care though. I've never met a NICE polo horses, they all have awful attitudes. (that I have seen).

I have nothing against cloning, but if your gonna clone, clone horses that have good qualities. Frenchman's Guy, for example. Beautiful conformation, proven producer, Nice Personalities on his colts, all good qualities.

Some people do not care if they have crooked legs or a bad attitude (in any event) If they make them money for awhile that's all that matters . Sad but true

While Storm Cat definitely tends to sire horses with bad attitudes and crooked legs, there is a reason that he was such a prolific sire. Kinda like DTF and all of the undesirable traits he puts out tthere...

I agree with the statement on confirmation. However, I had an ex polo pony & I will tell you now I have never ridden a horse more in tune to its rider or more athletic!!! That horse was a blast to ride as well as smart!!! He grew old & has died, but is buried in my pasture. I wouldn't hesitate to have another!!
