It looks like we will be moving from Dallas Texas to Michigan! We will need to be in the Taylor/ Birmingham area or within 30 to 40 minute commute of this area, these towns are not that far from Detroit. If any barrel buddies live in Michigan can you please fill me in on living in your state. Which areas are best to live in and which are best to avoid! The best area for buying a horse farm and not getting crushed with heavy taxes!!!!! Thanks!

Neither Taylor or Birmingham is going to be horse friendly. Taylor is mostly industrial area and high density. Dont even know if there would be a place there with any acreage if you looked. Birmingham is pricy zip code, and you better be mega wealthy to have horses there. There is still horse farms and boarding stables in the Flatrock area but its near Metro airport so your horses better not mind jets going overhead all day and night, and you will have to get used to that traffic also. Belleville still has horses and stables and if you go a bit farther west yet, Saline has all the city amenities yet is country atmosphere and plenty of room for horses. South Lyon used to be a horse mecca but urban sprawl is slowly pushing the horses out of there. Probably be best to plan on having to go at least a half hour or more commute out from either of those cities to have horses.

Those two towns are about 30 minutes apart. Not sure if you meant Troy? Going with Birmingham puts you north of Detroit. Options for horse farms/properties might be Milford
(30 miles out, West, pricey but nice
), Rochester
(20 miles out, northeast, again pricey but nice
), Clarkston
(25 miles out, pricey but great schools
). Oakland County in Michigan is the most expensive in the State. If you buy land, make sure you know the zoning. Some require at least 5 acres for 1 horse with 1/2 acre per horse after that.
Hope that helps!

I have a brother in law that lives in the belleville area. There are quite a few farms around him, but it's not too far of a drive to the city either. I'm not sure how pricey the places with property are though. Goodluck with the move!
