Currently I live in SW Colorado and I am thinking about heading south! Can anyone tell me about NM? How is the Barrel racing and racing there? What about the Ag communities and local food movement even? What are good areas? I am wanting to buy over 20 acres, I can deal with some winter, and would like a place with pasture.  Where do I start looking!

I moved from the northwest 6 years ago to Demming New Mexico and it's the worst place I've seen in my life its like a third world country not many jobs, most people can't function and its high in crime but I do like the weather. I've only been to a few local barrel races which was nice people were very friendly. I'm just so close to the boarder its a little scary.

I grew up in NM, near Santa Fe. That area is very expensive, not likely to get 20 acres unless you are well out of town, meaning the middle of no where or you have millions of dollars to spend. Green pastures, maybe but probably not, you are going to need to be near the river. Irrigation in some areas is not plentiful, you buy water rights. Not a lot of jobs other than service jobs, there isn't very much industry in NM, there are some government jobs if you are in a science related field. I would avoid ABQ, big city with a lot of crime, also expensive to buy property, won't find much in large acreage more like 2-4 acres. Unfortunately most areas of NM don't offer much in the way of jobs. Depending on what you have as a budget for a 20 acre property, in my opinion home prices are high for what you are getting unless you are spending a lot of money, taxes are high, amenities depends on what you like or want but lacking in many areas. Many of the smaller towns have suffered financially over the years and they look it. I left many years ago and really haven't had a desire to go back other than to visit, though I would live in Santa Fe again if I had several million dollars to spend for a place!

I lived in NE NM and loved it.  Grasslands, gorgeous ranching communities/areas. That area relates more to the panhandle of TX than it does NM.  But...they get winter, snow, far from towns and you have to haul a-ways to barrel races.

We also lived 30 min. south of Albuquerque in an area called Tome'.  It was another area I really liked and didn't think I would.  Valencia County gets a lot of press for crime but honestly it was the friendliest place I've ever lived and never experienced anything bad and neither had anyone else I ever spoke with in the time we lived there. People seem to enjoy their quality of life there.  Hay farms, pastures, but right off the bosque the desert reclaims itself quickly. You go from grassy lush green pastures to barren desert within a  short distance. Bosque Farms is a nice area.  And if you need to be close to jobs, Albuquerque is about 25 minutes away. Barrel races were closer, easier to get from here to there and the winter was very mild.

Grew up there....it does have some good points.  Ruidoso is beautiful.  Get ready to drive a long way to barrel races.  Outstanding Mexican food. (that's the end of my good points).  :D

I moved to Texas as soon as I could...went to college at TTU and wasn't ok with going back to NM.

Thanks guys, It sounds like home lol. Really my little town down here is quite sad, the only thing doing well is pot sales.

I'd probably be thinking of northern new mexico, no further south than Albuquerque.
