Can anyone tell me if any of her lines would require testing for the 5 panel diseases?

http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/dox+haidas+star

I know Impressive carried HYPP, so no issues with that here...I know Poco Bueno is known for HERDA, and I thought I heard something about King having something too? Otherwise I don't know of any other lines that carry the diseases.

I know that the 5 panel is required for breeding purposes, but I would more be testing for her health/safety, not for breeding.

Thanks!

I 5 panel tested my gelding for the same reason. I don't think AQHA will parcel them out, I think it's 5 panel only or HYPP only.

You can order testing directly from UC davis and order whatever you like, individually. https://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/horse.php

If I test her I might as well do it through AQHA. Do you buy the kit through them or someone else?

Call AQHA to order the kit, or I think you can do it online.

If you're set up with a password in the member area of the website, you can order test kits there.

IMO we need to test for the whole 5 panel because of the practice of switching papers on horses.  If you bought a horse that's been passed around a few times (you may not even know how many because a lot of people don't transfer the papers) I think it's wise to get the whole 5 panel through AQHA.  1. Any horse that has DNA on file, new sample will be compared with that old sample so you know you got the right horse that belongs to the papers.  2. If someone did switch papers, they could have any of the 5 panel disorders because the pedigree isn't the correct one for that horse. You don't know if the horse does or doesn't go back to one of the suspect horses.  3.  It will save time and money knowing what, if anything, the horse has. If the horse is having issues, if they are tested, you know it's not one of those disorders and you can look elsewhere. 4. Just looking at suspect horses in the pedigree has lots of holes.  They could go back to a suspect horse 20 times and still NOT have the disorder.  Or they could go back 1 time and have it.

I believe in testing and removing all doubt.  I've tested every horse on my property and now have 100% foals (last year and this year) that are from N/N tested parents.

I am going to test for everything either way. I'm just curious if anything in her bloodlines is known for carrying the diseases. Unfortunately her sire is deceased so I'm hoping they have DNA on file for him...dam is still alive. Does she have to be parentage verified to be able to be tested??

Not sure why you need the sire's DNA...  Order the kit through AQHA and test (it's super easy!)  If you ever want to breed her in the future, it's good to know what you have up front.  Good luck with your testing.

You don't need the sire DNA. They send you a kit, you rip out a chunk of mane and send it in. Easy peasy.

I don't think you need to worry about the sire's DNA. Chances are he's got DNA on file already.  Just send in your horses hair (roots included).  If she has already got hair on file, they compare it to the new sample. If she doesn't they will make sure she's got the right parents.

Leo is implicated in one of those and can't remember which, maybe PSSM. But yes she has a couple names I've heard to test over. Definitely worth it.

I just asked on the PSSM page and one of the ladies that is really into the research of these disorders doesn't suspect Leo of being a source of any of the currently known disorders.  If he were, he'd show up in a lot of pedigrees of horses with these problems as he was heavily bred to.

PSSM2 is still unknown if it's hereditary let alone if it could be recessive or dominant.

Poco Bueno and a full brother to PB seems to be the source.  But HERDA is recessive.  So it took longer to identify where it came from.
