I'm going to go look at a new horse this weekend am I really excited! I just have a couple questions. I know a lot of people say "you can't ride papers", but this is just a curious question of mine.

If you have 2 horses so to say, and they both have the same sire. (Their sires have like Dash for Cash and Bugs Alive in 75 in them so you know they are good barrel producers.)

Although they both have a great sire, their dams are completely different. One has more of racing blood (Rare Form and The Signature), and one has more of reining blood or even horses that I don't know a ton about on the dams papers. (Hollywood Dun It is the only one I even reconize

Which one do you think would make the better horse in the outcome (just based on pedigree)? They are only a year apart, the racing blooded colt is just started riding and the reining blooded colt is already winning at local jackpots.

So basically my question is, which one would have more benefits of being a barrel horse (speed and etc.) based on just pedigree?

Let the horse himself tell you which one. Which one is quicker and more athletic and which one is more workable/trainable.
As far as the "You cant ride papers". Alot of people say that but it is a huge falsehood!! You darn sure can and do ride papers!! If it were true, we wouldnt have any leading sires list and all stallions would stand for $1000.

I've always agreed, but I knew I'd probably get someone on here telling me you can't ride papers haha.

As far as more athletic goes, which one do would you see excelling farther in their barrel career? Or is it just one of them times where it can't really be determined?

A good cowhorse mare will outproduce a bad race horse mare and vice versa. You have the same sire and without knowing either dam, or even with knowing either dam, ALL horses have a story and it's best to let the horse tell his own story. There will be one you like better then the other.

There are so many factors, but I think if you look at and ride both horses you'll see which one is better for you personally. Conformation, temperament, how the horses travel, etc. Pedigree is a great starting point, but the other things should be considered as well. You should have a pretty good idea about the barrel potential of the one already being hauled. Also think about your own wants - do you want to be able to haul now or do you have the time/desire to get one going?
