mollibtexan - 2015-08-25 9:18 PM If you watch my Facebook I post futurity deadlines. It's actually Dec 1 they turn the next years age. My 4yr old futurity horses are 3 right now.
It's January 1st when they are considered a year older. This is so in all AQHA approved events and most other registries.  Dec 1 date to begin competing is only in barrel futurities, not the horse's age.
I think you guys are saying the same thing in different ways

I read it that they said the horse turns a year older on Dec 1.  Not so.  Being able to start competing on your futurity horse on or after Dec 1 has nothing to do with their age on Jan 1.  It's an arbitrary rule for the barrel futurity industry only. AQHA nor any of the other disciplines have that rule. That's what I'm saying.

The BRN4D website has a list of their approvals and co-approvals.  There must be a place with an event list somewhere.  BHN used to list them as well.

Make a list of the futurities that you are interested in. Barrel Horse News usually has futurity advertisements in it way before the entry fees are due. Some futurity payments are not all due at one time. Some have three ,four or six payments. Get a calendar and mark the dates of the futurities that you are interested in and dates the entry fees are due. The futurities at Buckeye AZ are the first ones of the year---the first few weeks in January. The first part of the entry fee is due in October. This is about as far west as we are planning to go so I do not know what futurities are in CA. There are several in the Northwest. One thing that I will say is that your horse better be going very well BEFORE you start paying the entry fees. Make sure that you pay them on time because there are late fees. Make sure that you follow each futurity"s rules.

Y'all get your panties in a wad way to easy. We compete on our coming 4yr olds in December....so they are actually 3yrs old. Geez you just try to help on here and everyone has always got to be "right". All I'm saying is you can complete on a futurity horse after December 1 not January 1. I go to BFA in December, AZ Futurities in January Classic Equine---Greg Olsen----PAC West, , LG Pro Classic February, Diamonds and Dirt March, April BBR OKC, May Ft Smith, Twin Lakes Fairfield, July NE Futurities, there are a lot up north in July and August, Jud Little Sept, November JB Quarter horses, December BFA Futurity if the horse is 4 only if you Futurities as a 5 yr old you have to run in Derby.

The Classic Equine is January 6-7 and the Greg Olsen is the next weekend. We are going to attend this one just to watch and see what I should be doing with my horse. There is another one in California in March or April (I think.) I want to say it is in Linwood (Riverside or San Bernardino County) or somewhere. Sorry...I am going off my brain right now and apparently it's fried from work.

Mollie is correct. All AQHA, APHA, Palomino registry, Buckskin registry, Jockey Club and most other registries consider a horse to be 3 or 4 or any age JANUARY 1. The date that you can start COMPETEING on a 3 year old is DECEMBER 1 of their 3 year old year. I think the main reason for using this date for futurity horses is so they can compete in the JUVENILE at the BFA in Oklahoma City in early December. After that they can compete in any barrel race in preparation for the spring futurities. By the way, the horses that run in the JUVENILE are ready to run 1D times in any competition or they should be. What I am saying is that you better do your homework.

Have y'all seen thefuturity.com? Really great online magazine with most of the major events put in a calendar and advertised. It even shows geographical location and whether the futurity is for 4 year olds or 5 year olds. Has a bunch of good stallion advertisements too. I used it to get an initial list for when my girl is five.

No panties in a wad here. I go commando.  Accuracy is what I'm after. There is nothing simple or for dummies about horses.  There is a lot to learn.
