Interesting article I just came across. I'm having mystery lameness with my mare and I have it isolated to her from left foot. No obvious bruising or anything. She wore hoof boots all night and she is better but still not 100%. Sound in a straight line and very lame in a circle to the left. I was considering soaking her foot to try to draw out a possible abscess but now I'm not so sure.... I am planning to get x rays this week and whatever else the vet feels necessary.

I suggest you do the epsom salts soaking deal for an abscess based upon my experience where an abscess was not apparent on the surface but my mare did actually have one (found after the vet dug into the foot etc. ) If the lameness appeared suddenly without you doing something rather drastic and obviously straining something it could just be an interal briuse from a stone.

Naturally, using a  vet is ideal and you could ask her advice in this regard before spendinga a lot on x-rays.

If it was a joint or bone issue I would suspect some heat should be showing up or some swelling etc .

Maybe try the soaking on vet's advice and a hoof supplement to help heal things up and deep bedding for comfort, or even easy boots etc.

Has your farrier looked at it?

A little more info:

Chiro adjusted her Tuesday and found some pretty bad problem areas; left hip and right side of her withers was out and the muscles surrounding them were pretty sore. Serenity was moving great before the chiro left. Next day she was completely lame. Chiro coached me through some muscle tightness with me sending pics and videos. Serenity improved but still pretty lame. So Saturday we made the 2 1/2 hour trip to her place. Ren's issues had switched to the opposite diagonal (left front/right hip), she worked on Ren for a few hours, had her on the TheraPlate twice, and had a PHT magnetic sheet on her in between TheraPlate sessions. Managed to work all the kinks out and she was now sound in a straight line, ok but a little off in a circle to the right, and completely lame in a circle to the left. So we now had it isolated to the front left and decided the vet was my next step.

Came home very late so Sunday morning I put hoof boots on her and she improved in a circle to the left. Left them on all night and took another video this morning and its a big improvement but she's still off. I'm calling the vet tomorrow morning and will be setting up an appointment.

I have had a history of farriers laming this mare and some random lameness issues that usually went away before my vet appointment so she always vet checked fine. So this could be a chronic issue or it could be a sudden onset like an abscess that hasn't surfaced yet.

Have you taken hoof testers to it and pin pointed exactly where it is? If you can find the exact spot, I would assume a bruise or abscess, I think an abscess they will be lame no matter what, straight line or turning(from my experience). I've been battling Laminitis in one of mine and he was classic, sound in a straight line off turning. Don't soak for laminitis, i'd wait for x-rays first!

We did hoof testers and she was inconsistent in her reactions. I'm finally in contact with my farrier so hooefully between chiro, farrier, and vet we can get this all sorted out.

Soaking it just to see definitely isn't going to do any harm, but if the abscess is still fairly deep, a couple soaking sessions aren't going to do much. When my horse abscessed and was VERY lame, the vet had to carve into his hoof to make any progress.

A little stiff to the left before chiro but no limping. In the process of trying to line up a time that works for the vet and me now.
