We are thinking about going to Alpine to watch my daughter's college rodeo.  I'm looking at the town on the map and see that the train runs right through town.  Question - can you hear the train in the hotels or much anywhere else in town?  My hubs absolutely will not sleep through a train whistle so I was wondering if we should stay in one of the neighboring towns?

Any other useful info about the area?  Local flavor?  Hidden gems?    It's 500+ miles for us one way so we are thinking about staying an extra day or two.

Out of all the college rodeo's that one was my least favorite. The train doesn't come through often, or even at all. I can't remember seeing it in the 4 days I was there and I rode quite far down the trails by the train tracks.. There's a mcdonalds and a pizza hut, then a very expensive country style steakhouse that everyone thought was a rip off. I'm sorry for being so negative about it, since you will be there with your family i'm sure you will have a better time. I was very uncomfortable being that close to the border and basically all alone the whole 4 days. I never really knew what the middle of no where was until I went to Alpine lol

It will forsure be an adventure! I would bring extra food/water and maybe an extra tank of gas going that far out. It will be an adventur that's for sure!

Great little town. Deer run through the town like they own it. Funny mix of college kids and retirees. I never heard the train at night when we visited my son when he went to college there. I'll ask him about, though. It's not that close to the border.

No offense but didn't your CR career consist of about half a season?

To the OP, when God was making the world he was almost done and the last thing he had to do was create hell and some sewer lines for the major cities.

He had a little of both left over at the end and was trying to figure out what to do with it when Gabriel, you know the Archangel, said "God, what are we going to do with all this open space in West Texas"?

God looked at Gabriel, smiled, wiggled his nose, and Alpine became. God dropped the Mic, slowly turned and walked away.

Welcome!  We live in Fort Davis.  Used to live in Alpine.  Yes the train runs through town and yes it can be loud.  The Holland Hotel, the grand cattle-baron hotel in town, has ear plugs on every nightstand.  :)  If I were you though, I'd stay in Fort Davis, it's a beautiful drive through the canyon.  eta: if you decide to stay in Fort Davis, I'd call ahead and see if the Limpia Hotel, the Harvard Hotel or Stone Village has rooms available.  There is also the Sproul Ranch, and some B&B's up here. We're in the mountains, very picturesque up here.

Surrounding towns are Marathon to the east (nothing much there but the famed Gage Hotel), Marfa - very artsy and expensive now. You'll go and wonder WHY??  lol It has the other famed hotel, Hotel Paisano where the cast stayed when they filmed the movie Giant there.  Other than that there is the Fort Davis Loop Road - pretty drive through our mountains.  The Fort Davis National Historic Site, McDonald Observatory up here...I don't know if they'll be having Star Parties at that time or if you'll have time but everyone loves those.  There is old Terlingua, the entry way to Big Bend National Park, and the drive along the river road between Terlinqua and Lajitas and Presidio, but it would take up a lot of time just driving.

Train tracks run right through town and right next to arena. It does come through fairly often. If he can't stand that, then you could stay in ft Davis. The short drive to alpine is really pretty. Best hotels in the area are Gage in Marathon (only thing there is the hotel and it's pretty desolate country) and the Holland in Alpine (train is very near that though). Ft Davis has some neat hotels too. Tilt the kilt gave you excellent info. Quite a bit to do. Just outside of Alpine, is the Marfa lights. I liked that. I would not stay in Marfa. I too wondered....WHY! Lol !
