So in the summer my 3 guys usually are all on grass alone and look fine. Last year they weren't looking as good as I liked, so this summer I kept them on a small amount of Equine Senior and they look ok. But I've gone to feeding alfalfa and rice bran after looking around a lot. They've been on it about 6 weeks and they look awesome. Even the 27 year old. But I'm thinking for the winter, I need to add some supplement or vitmins or something. They get free choice Jiggs Bermuda through the winter along with the alfalfa and rice bran.

THE has a great vitamin/mineral/amino acid supplement in Performance Formula (starts at $55 for 2 1/2 months worth) or Muscle Mass (starts at $65 for 2 1/2 months worth

I've been trying mine on the Pinnacle balancer this summer. All they get is turnout during the day, grass hay, Alf cubes, and rice bran. I feed 1-2 pounds per horse. They have done really well on it so far. Very economical to feed when you have several.

If the rice bran that you are feeding is stabilized rice bran, (yes there really is a difference), then you should be OK just adding three or four pounds of Alfalfa to the diet per day to slow the hind gut down and making sure that their teeth are up to date.

I was referring to the horses still being on pasture when I mentioned adding alfalfa above. If you are feeding straight alfalfa now. And the rice bran is stabilized, you are getting most of what you need if they are not living a high stress life. If the rice bran is not stabilized, a vitamin support may be needed. Mineral wise, you should be good unless there is a specific mineral shortage in your area.

Animal Element has Foundation Detox which is a great overall supplement for coat, joints, hooves, topline. We also have a new mineral called Mineral 201 that is an amazing loose mineral.

Mine get Enrich 32, rice bran and alfalfa pellets or cubes and pasture 24/7 - hay if put up due to weather.

My horses get all you can eat alfalfa.  Have a mare that came back from hunting camp and needs some weight put back on before she goes back up in a month or so.  If I don't feed cubes will most horses just eat the rice bran?  I have never fed it before so I am not sure how to really feed it.

If the rice bran is stabilized, most horses will gladly eat it straight once they get used to it. If it is just raw rice bran it is rancid when you get it. In that case, if it is rancid enough, some horses may either eat it for a while and then quit, or may not eat it at all. If you use raw rice bran, you will still get the fat calories, but not the high vitamin support that have been destroyed when it became rancid. Stabilized rice bran is super high in very potent Vit E. I don't ever recommend feeding raw rice bran, but, if you do, you should add additional vitamin support. There is a big difference in nutritional value between the two.
