I posted about my "lazy" horse a few weeks ago. I won't go into long details unless necessary for discussion but I'm pretty sure I have pinpointed it to him being sore in the hind end. I haven't had him to the vet yet, but how do you know if a joint supplement is good, injections or just something like adequin? Where do you start? What are all the options?

I think if horse has been sore already Id bypass Supplements.. They are more of a preventative and maintenance .. Adequan might help but Id have vet xray and flex and see where he is sore and if he needs injections.. how old is horse?

I start with the vet.  Don't believe in feed thrus, there are multiple studies that show their ineffectiveness.

If a horse needs injections, there isn't a feed through or injectable that will make it better.

X-rays will help show arthritis in hocks. If there is arthritis (like my horse has), I inject the joint, and I've started him on Pentosan to prolong the time between injections. I think joint supplements benefit a BIT, but won't show results like injections do. I want to get mine on a supplement when I can afford the extra cost, but for now, adding MSM is enough for me to feel good about the situation.

We've given Adaquan in the past and it's good stuff. I'm trying out Pentosan as its a bit cheaper.

14. He was a futurity colt. I think he cut cattle as well because he knows it when we mess around. I'm his 4th owner. He was rode hard young but has had an easy life with me for the past 5 years. I ran him as a everyother weekend hobby barrel racer and then he has had 2 years off (pasture time) until May of this year where I'm getting back on him.

Personally Id have vet take xrays of hocks then and go from there.. he may need injected then started on maintenance Adequan.. you want to go ahead and do that because if its his hocks it will move up.. to back and stifles etc.. list of issues.. Id start xrays..

I didn't think mine was sore until I did take him to a vet to look at his hocks once he hit about 14 years. The vet does a quick lameness check and then uses a pen type object to press and manipulate points in the joint. When he gets a reaction he further investigates. He decided his lower hocks were sore and when he put the needle in and drew his natural fluid out there was very little and it was like water in substance instead of the thicker slippery state it should be in. A week after injections it was like riding a totally new horse. Best decision I ever made and where I go it is very inexpensive to get done and he's considered one of the best to go to in the midwest and i trust him. I do it every spring before the season starts and he suggested giving him glucosamine injections just to boost him a bit and it is much more effective and cost efficient than feed through joint supplements. Between my injections and glucosamine each year total it's still less than Adequan. A years worth of glucosamine is under $100 and so are my hock injections. My horse has bone spurs in both knees and hocks and I haven't had an issue with soundness yet.
