I feed Country Acres
(made by Purina
) high fat pellets
(12/8
).
I go back and forth about feeding something different but the horses do great on this feed. And it's $10.55 a 50 lb. bag.
In my area it is made at the Purina mill in Fort Worth, and all horse feed is made in a totally separate mill from cattle feed.
I know some very successful futurity trainers who feed the same thing and they win, so I guess it works.
We
(my mom and I
) swapped to this after learning about ionophores. Our local mill where we've bought feed from for YEARS had had multiple complaints of sick and/or dead horses recently. We've fed Nutrena in the past and that's a no-go as well.
Mon just bought a new horse and he was in the Country Acres hf and looks great. So we rolled with that. It's affordable, safe, and you never have to worry if it's in stock. The feed store manager even cut us a deal if we buy over 1000 lbs.
Like you, I also know some jam up horses in the area that eat Country Acres. A purina rep told Mom it is very similar to Impact.
I actually just went and bought alfalfa cubes and while oats for my personal horses. But all of hubby's horses, and my moms will still be getting the CA.

I am curious to see where most of this cross-contamination is happening...if there are issues in your area can you tell me where that area is? I haven't heard anything where I am in Midland, Texas and am wondering if the issues are mainly up north.
Secondly, which grain companies don't also have cattle crap at their mills? I am not interested in feeding cubes or pellets...have had too many horses choke and I have really goodย quality alfalfa and pasture right now. ย
ย
Since you have good quality alfalfa ... all you need to do is to add whole oats as your grain side of your feeding program ...
ALFALFA AND WHOLE OATS IS THE MOST BALANCED NUTRIENT BASED NATURAL FEEDING YOU CAN DO ...
ADD A HANDFUL OF ADM GROSTRONG MINERALS EVERY OTHER DAY
and you will love how your horses act and look on this simple feeding program ..
Keep a good worming program going and no more worry on feed problems!!
If you want a super gorgeous shine and a kick up on your horses immune systems ..
add 8 oz of WHOLE FLAX SEEDS TO YOUR DAILY FEEDINGS to each horse ..
Don't make this complicated ... use a 5 gal restaurant type bucket and layer a scoop of whole oats ; some flax seed; and every other day the Grostrong minerals until bucket is full ... and just scoop the mix out to each horse when feeding ... add an extra scoop of the mix for any poor keepers ...
GOOD LUCK ... you will like what you see ...
