The NBHA is dying as people are tired of getting ripped off along with their district directors. Texas went from over 1100 entries to lucky to less then we get for a good 5-D open jackpot show.
^^ This. I stopped running NBHA because the payout is just not worth it. Our State show nickle and dimes you to death and if you choose to late enter you are looking at over 100$ in late entries alone, that's before you even pay for your regular entries. For me to spend 300$ for a weekend on ONE horse, I better be able to triple my money. Plus, in my area, an NBHA show takes ALL day. They don't cut off expos, they run pee-wees, youth, then open, and then they take so dang long to get anything going, by the time you run it is almost 5 or 6 in the evening and you've been there since 10am. I wish world was closer for me but it's too expensive to pay entries and haul that far when I have bigger paying shows closer and the entries are half the price. Get it together NBHA or you will be a thing of the past.

Swannranch - 2015-10-15 7:42 PM A couple years ago it was over 1000, last year it was close to 900 if not over 900. This seems to be the lowest since we started going. I think it was 795 but there will be some late entries (you can pay a double entry fee after the deadline and still run but there are only usually 5 or 6)
I always enjoy the week but I do agree the payout needs to be better. It is the best thing we have going on the East coast though. Out west there are so many other good organizations. Here there is only Prorodeo, NBHA and a few IBRA's but the district IBRA show closest to us is not run well (or had serious problems anyway when it started) I won't go back. Also it looked like the National IBRA show was tiny, less than 500 from what I read.
We will have fun no matter what. Some years they win money, other years they don't, but it's usually a good time.
IBRA Nationals show was the same way last year. I don't think they are as "big" as NBHA yet, especially in the western states (as in they don't even have any shows).
I ran last year and had a blast. I think there were almost 400 in the open. It was very well run, and the facility is fantastic.
I didn't do much this year running wise as work kept me very busy, and I picked up a colt. However, I did see that someone broke the arena record this year at Nationals. I think IBRA will continue to grow as (at least in Indiana) it is run pretty well and has decent year end awards. I know that varies from state to state, and I think Indiana is one of the biggest.
I like the NBHA, but it is dying. They need to change up their game. It's getting to be outdated. There are so many big shows that have a better payyout and no late fees. Nobody really wants to trailer race for points and year end awards except maybe kids.
I live in IN and choose not to pay the ibra membership. Why should I when I can go and run anyways. I enjoy going to the state shows, but I could care less about nationals. It's a trailer race for points when half the shows are rinkadinks. The fees are outrageous and who wants to spend a whole week in cloverdale? It's a nice facility for weekend shows, but they have too many races there and there's nothing to do or places to eat in that town. I get that they need to differentiate themselves from the NBHA but there's a lot of rules that don't make sense.
They are loosing their tougher crowd and only drawing the local 4-ders. Back in the day if you had a good horse NBHA supers shows were the shows to chase and they just aren't anymore. Now a days you can run weekend to weekend at big shows and never even have to show local.

I don't pay the NBHA membership for the same reason. I did pay IBRA this year as I'd like to run state and nationals again next year before my horse gets too old (coming 19 this year).
You sure are right about the trailer race. I sure don't chase year ends. Ain't nobody got time for that (since I work full time)

| I loved the world show but it's a haul and you have to be able to take off work for a whole week (or more depending on where you are coming from). My last job was a "if you don't work you don't get paid" kind of deal and now that i started my new job I don't get that much vacation time. I agree, shorten it and it would make it much more affordable and easier on people. | |
