My grandma use to live near some Mexicans......you would see them at the sale barn almost every week. They would buy some fat cheap horses.....but you newer saw them at their house.
i remember one day riding by when I was about 15 years old, they were butchering one of the horses they bought, and having a big party while doing it.

My question is, and yes this story is heart breaking and is HORRIBLE, but that aside, why is eating horse meat so taboo? I love my horses and would never want to eat them, but if the world was ending and they had to go, I would eat them. I see horses as a livestock animal, they are not pets to me, they serve a purpose. I guess I just never understood why people have an issue with slaughtering horses for human consumption. Like I said, this particular case is horrible and completely WRONG, but in general, legally, why is eating horses so taboo?
I think a lot of it is how they are treated at the sale barn and at the packers. I worked at a sale barn for years and those guys back there can get really rough, they were very free with the hotshots. Also, I know a lot of them end up in Mexico where they treat them even worse. That is why I will never run a horse or an ex show heifer through the sale. It's not the eating them that disturbs me, it's the rough treatment they receive before they die that disturbs me. Is it practical, heck no, and if we were starving I would eat horse meat or an ex show geifer, but they wouldn't be treated bad before I did. | |

Because in the US horses are mostly seen as pets. I grew up in Europe were over the last couple of decades it got out of style to eat horsemeat, but I do remember eating it when I was young. It was a cheaper kind of meat back then.
I do know it is still considered delicacy in France. And many other (non European) countries.
Heck, when visiting Yugoslavia in the 80's, (before the war started) my family and me were served sheep brains when we visited with a local family. That was considered an honor, because they see it as the best part of the animal.... and no way you can refuse or you would be offending the host....
Would I eat my own horses, mmmm, only when that was the last resort ever....and I would be a vegan before that ever happened!!! But I'd rather not think about that.
Am I against people eating horsemeat. Nope, as long as the animal did not suffer. I feel it is the same with cows and other animals. It's not like the freezers at the store are magically filled with plastic wrapped meat.... that did come from somewhere. No difference there. IMO
This particular case though is horrible, and illegal.

I never stated it was "taboo".....if that is what someone can afford, go for it. Alot of people are against eating any kind of animal now days. Just look at the attempts to stop the slaughter of pigs, and cattle.
I eat alot of deer, even squirrel...because hey, it's cheaper to buy a tag, hunt a deer and butcher it yourself, than it is to go out and buy even just a pound of hamburger that will cost $5-$7 a pound.

I have no issues with horses being used for meat, I just want it done humanely. (the same way I believe all animals should be handled.) I don't care if you're hunting or running a packing house, there is a humane way to kill things. It would solve so many problems to make it legal in the states. I personally don't want to ever have to eat horsemeat, but I'd prefer others do so rather than see starving horses. If this was my horse that had been stolen and butchered - I'd do my best to go after the low life scum that did it.

Sorry I didn't mean you were saying taboo, your comment just kind of helped my random thought take place  It's just a curious thought that we, as humans, use to eat horses. Then someone came along and said, "o no no no, we can't be doing that.," and everyone went along with it. It's very interesting. To any of us who have pigs, cows, horses, I think we understand a little better than most the issues that a 1300lb carcass causes. I wish there was a better solution to "disposing" of large livestock animals, especially horses. I think every day what am I going to do with my horses if they die. Having cattle my whole life, we don't keep a cow past the age of 15, to much risk of death and then disposing of a body. I feel the same way with my horses, love them but what happens when they get to "that" age? I can't be the only one who thinks like this.... | |

I am fortunate, my horses die and are buried on my place. I am blessed to have that option. I couldn't even begin to imagine an age count down for when I would have to get rid of them for that reason.
In regards to the original posting, some people should just not have animals and the people in this story are those type people. I will never understand allowing a living creature to starve. How could someone sit there, eat and live well and not feed/take care of their animals. Hope they are prosecuted severly. | |

| I totally agree with you and MLH on this subject. I have no intentions of eating a horse but I'm not against humane slaughter of horses, cattle, etc. Sending the slaughter houses to Mexico was the biggest atrocity ever! They are ruthless, heartless people and torture animals.
The horses being found butchered in pastures in FL makes me sick but I have heard of several instances of that happening. This is not something new but it is a serious problem. I apologize for not being politically correct but the problem IMO is we have let thousand of illegals in this country that are ruthless, heartless people. They have no respect for other people or animals. The general public is going to have to "pick them off" (in self defense of course) to eliminate them because our government isn't going to do a **** thing.
Anyone that hires an illegal for any job big or small is contributing to the problem. When they can't come make money, they will go back where they came from.
