| I'm looking at a 5 year old racehorse. She is only 15.1 hands. Her temperature is very good. She is actually still racing. I have been riding her though and she doesn't have the mind set of most racehorses. I can walk and trot on loose reins. She is very controllable at a canter too. She still has the racehorse body but hopefully get her beefed up after her last race in a couple days.
I would like to have some opinions about what everyone thinks about getting one and training it for barrels and rodeos. I've been getting told not to get her. She has no vet issues and never got injected. I got told I would not get any more muscle on her and that it wouldn't make a good barrel horse. Any opinions? |

Location: north dakota | I don't have one but there is someone that runs an OTT in my area. If I didn't know it was a TB I would assume it was a QH. The horse is very nice and I've seen her win the 1D. She's got a long stride and it looks slow but clocks fast. |

Location: Kansas | I would go for it! I have no experience with OTTB's but I have a QH gelding who looked like a thoroughbred and threw him out on pasture for a while and he has put on a lot of muscle and mass. |

So you think all racehorses are crazy?? I just will never understand why people think that race horses don't have the "mind set" to do something else. It all goes back to how they were raised and started. |

Location: Ohio girl moved to PA | It all depends on the horse. OTTB makeovers are VERY popular in my area right now. Especially with us being so close to the RRP. I think its amazing people taking them and giving them other jobs. Ive worked at the tracks before and its all in how they are raised and treated. You absolutly can beed them up and add muscle. Their diet right now is horrible compared to what you can give her. If shes sound, safe and you like her, why not? Ive seen sooo many OTTBs take to barrels beautifully, but i also have seen some that just dont, so hopefully you picked a good one! check out ottb western on fb and ig. youll see so many others that have done the same! One is a personal friend of mine and her and her horse MO do awesome together! |

| Don't listen to the naysayers. I say go for it. It sounds like you get along with her. There are non-racehorses with amazing barrel racing bloodlines that are not very good minded. Not every ex-racehorse is a dink. Horses are all individuals. Find one you actually enjoy. It makes riding and training fun. |

| My friends had a stallion off the track, he had a 95 speed index in Southern California back in the day. He was a qh, but still a race horse, and one of the best horses I've ever ridden. I agree with those who say if you like her, she's doing well for you, has no vet issues, go for it. If you have been riding her, you know what to expect, so it's not that big of a risk. If I were you, I would buy her.
A lot of the "crazy" in racehorses, and other performance horses as well, all comes down to foundation work, training and diet. |

| My niece rides one and she does have some quirks that I believe came from the track but you could tell she was not handled properly. She is a 3D barrel horse and potentially could be better with more consistency on the pattern but she is a nice horse. She is super quiet at home but does tend to get pretty hot in the gate. I am grateful for her. |
