| I have a mare that is 9. I've raised and trained her. Shes a steller horse but very quirky and aware of things. She is 1d at big shows and has won pro rodeo money... I feel kind of dumb asking this but I am kind of curious if it'd help her confidence in the rodeo arena. I've been seasoning her at quite a few rodeos for the last two years. In pens where the barrels are off the fence she runs hard like she would at a barrel race but in pens where the barrels are on the fence her head raises, her ears go up and she gawks at the crowd up above her which obviously makes her shut down. I have been reading about a shadow roll... it helps obviously for things on the ground but also it makes a horse look at what is in front of them. If they raise their head, it blocks their view making them keep their head more level.... I thought I could use something like this at rodeos where the barrels are on the fence and she gawks at the crowd.... BUT I wanted to see if anyone has used it and what your reason was for using it. THANKS!!!!

Location: texas | never heard of a shadow roll.... I am curious....
only thing I have seen used is the blinders, which u can get in various sizes depending on how much of the vision u want to restrict... |

Location: Kansas | I would think it would help. I've got a gelding who is very watchy, I'm going to actually make one out of his noseband. I was told it should help him focus on whats in front instead of the surroundings. |

Location: Buffalo, Wyoming | We are old race horse people so we have used shadow rolls for a long time. I had a mare that was just naturally high headed and I ran her with a shadow roll for the last couple of years I owned her. It helped her a lot!
I am sure it will help your horse drops its head a little bit I don't know if it will actually help with the gawkiness... It would not hurt to try. I think they are cheap enough it would be nice to have one around anyway.

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | I've used a shadow roll on several different horses. It's been most helpful for me on getting one further into the pocket before they start their turn or encouraging a lower head. My gelding was trained in one because he was looky and would shy and jump at things on the ground, like shadows or tire marks. My experience using it that way is that if they want to gawk, they will put their head down and gawk anyway. LOL |

| I heard a long time ago that a horse will only stride out until they see their feet in front of them. In theory, the shadow roll worked good on horses who ran with their face pretty vertical (instead of with their nose out in front of them) and the shadow roll supposedly made them reach further in their stride.

Location: Minnesota | I've used a shadow roll with my gelding and it's really helped. He also gets distracted and likes to look around.
I've always wanted to try the blinkers but never have. If you go that route update us please.  |
