Bear - 2015-11-06 1:15 PM I'm pretty sure Bob is over 80. Does someone know for sure? His daughter Patti Hoveland does a nice job as well. You would think a fella his age would be laid back, but he is a fierce competitor. He and his wife are always side by side. She's his moral support. It's a pretty neat thing to watch. Bob doesn't take a back seat to anyone, anywhere as far as I'm concerned when it comes to his riding. I'd stack him up against anyone. Google: Bob Manor and Manor's Nick Bar, and see for yourself. He always seems to do everything the same way.....walks his horse up the alley, turn him around, squares him up, and makes his 1D run. I don't think there's anyone even in Texas even close to his age who compares. I think he's every bit as tough as June Holeman.

here in ga  we have the legend  carl wise  he is super nice he was reserve in nbha world this year just a wink of eye did sabre out run him

So cool to see Vickie Carter going to the NFR. I'm curious, how many of you still compete in your 60's, and at what level?

Are you a barn burner like Vickie and June, who still ride like you're 40?

Like Martha Wright, do you burn up the 1D where ever you go?

Or, do you sort of stick with a solid horse that maybe get's you in the 2 or 3D?

There is a lady in my office who has been to the IFR/Circuit Finals, etc several times. I believe she is 66 this year and she kicked my BUTT and won the 1D for our local NBHA district last year. And she kicked pretty much everyone else's butt, too. But I can't get her to pattern my colt for me. LOL...she says she will help but has no interest in getting on them anymore. I hope I am like her when I am her age!

I think Bob Manor is at least 80. He was running top of the 1D at big shows up north fairly regularly. I think he's a better rider than most people in their 20's, honestly. Just to give you an idea, once in a while he runs poles. I've posted a 19.8 second run he made just a couple years ago when he was a more spry 78, or thereabouts. I think they should put together a collection of his barrel and pole runs, with slow motion and sell them as educational videos.

Well, I used to think that older men ran better than older women. Their bodies age, but ours sort of well, 'move around' and age.

However watching June, and the lady that I think was 64 that made it to the finals at Cheyenne, well, just awesome.

I do some 50 and over clinics and have found that the secret to success as we age is in finding the right horse. I have a friend who came to one of the clinics that is in her 70's... She was afraid she just didn't have that edge anymore... After riding her mare I knew why! Her horse was really hard to ride in the pattern. She was heavy on her front end and it made her rough around the barrels. I put her on my gelding and she had NO trouble at all riding him through the pattern.

I have lots of ladies come to the clinic that are in their late 50's and 60's who are amazing riders and still running in the top of the 1d. You just need a nice smooth horse as you get older!

I have been lucky in that I have an older guy that is very solid, very smooth, but he's been passed along to the grandaughter. The next one is smooth as well, but young and not as solidd, but he's a FWF, and as smooth as glass. He's got KS, and I'm going to have that fixed hopefully next month, so come spring we can start back.

Sort of what I was wondering was like one poster responded, that is getting hurt. I don't think I bounce like I used to. And my balance and reaction time isn't what it was even 5 years ago. I never was a consistent 1D rider. I've hit it a few times at smaller shows here in Texas, but that is not a 1D rider.

I think I need to go to a 50 and over clinics to see if I can just be more comfortable when I run. I'll be 62 next month, and it's good to here there's folks out there than still go and win!

I have 9 head of 1-2d horses that I try to get ridden everyday.  I sure hurt more when I come in at night then I used t but I don't have any plans of quitting for a long time yet.

Wow!

There are 2 60 plus gals in my area that still run and they are tough.  And they usually ride 2-3 horses each at a race.  I'm 50, not sure how much longer I'll barrel race just because I'm loving the reining more but I don't intend to quick riding or competing till I can't get on.  I think the longer a person can stay active and mobile and following their passion the healthy and better off they are.
