Location: California | *Quick recap on the history of all this. Serenity was diagnosed with kissing spine and front left coffin joint inflammation in September. She has been completely lame since September 2nd. Reata Equine wanted to inject her back and front left coffin joint but i could afford it so we did muscle relaxers and bute for 5 days. Front foot was 95% better but still off in a left hand circle.*
I have to do a huge rave on Dr Don Lee at Double X Equine in Bowie, Tx and Nick Ross a farrier in Wichita Falls, Tx!
I took Serenity to Dr Lee on Saturday thinking I would have to at least inject her front left foot. He saved me quite a bit of money telling me he didn't think x-rays or injections were needed. He said to get a correct and balanced shoe job and go from there. Dr Lee also believes her back should not be an issue if I keep her feet good and focus on her using her body correctly!
My farrier just argued saying what the vet said was "inadequate" (his word). So I did what any good horse owner would do. I found a new farrier.
Nick Ross fit Ren into his schedule on short notice yesterday. He took his time with her and even showed me a couple stretches to do with her. Nick did not leave till he was confident that the shoe job would help her.
Today I did the leg stretches with Ren and then rode her. She felt GREAT! She was a little tense at first and I think worried about pain coming but she started to relax and loosen up! Mainly stuck to LARGE circles. Started with straight aways and large curves for turns. We did a few smaller circles at a trot and lope at the end just to see and she still felt great! |

I was wondering about her earlier tonight when I saw you post somewhere else. I am so glad for you and her |

I too this year have found the true value of a great vet and farrier!! After a solid year and countless times at the vet. And having a gut feeling there's more to it. I finally took mine to a new vet and first thing she did was look at his feet, when all the others didn't. X rayed He was waaaayy out of balance, left to right and under slung and was only at 11mm sole thickness which normal is around 14-15 .told me find a new farrier, he is crippling him. i was in tears! how could I let someone I have trusted for 15 years get complacent on me. And how could i let him do this!
After thinking about all the ones I had asked him in the past I had had enough of my old farrier As I had been asking him to shorten his toes, and get him back on his heels. Never realizing that he was also out of balance under the shoe!!! Before my horse was landing toe first, and had too much to break over.
Finally fired him and got a new farrier in march! And after almost a year I have my horse back!!!! I also notice he is landing on his whole foot!! Not toe first!! His heels are expanding, his breakover is quick. And he ran his fastest time ever two weekends ago!!! |

Location: California | My farrier brought her breakover a little further back and Serenity feels fantastic! No more resistance at all!
Took Serenity to her first barrel race since this whole thing started in September. Just did some exhibitions but she did great! I do have to redo the fixing of her trying to turn to soon but we will get back to where we were before she went lame! Serenity felt great and was ready to RUN! After the barrel race we tried out a few saddles and I fell in love with an Ammerman but it was a pinch narrow on Ren. So we brought home a Vernon Purdy saddle to try for a while. There is another barrel race today so we will see how things go!
I can not thank Dr Don Lee from Double X Equine in Bowie and Nick Ross (farrier) in Wichita Falls enough! Without these two men I have no doubt that I would have been convinced to inject and I would STILL have a lame horse. |

Location: California | Serenity felt GREAT today! We did 2 exhibitions just to work on not turning to soon and then went ahead and entered. Didn't figure we would place but that wasn't my goal. I can not wait to see how she is doing a month from now with more conditioning and some work to fix where I screwed us up. Lol
We ran 2 tenths of a second off our fastest time in this particular arena. With 3 months off and literally just getting back into the swing of things I am VERY happy with that time! |

Location: California | Thanks ladies! I have to say I was skeptical about the Vernon Purdy saddle but I think I may have to start paying for it... Lol. I have always been more worried about keeping my seat then riding my horse during a run. In the VP saddle I felt VERY secure and balanced!
Now we just need to figure out proper head gear for my mare and I need to work on my riding during high speed runs. Again. Lol. I've just been riding my green 3yr old so I think I'm stuck in training mode again. |
