I picked up a "Cookes Boon" mare, one of the original GL studs babies, I've heard a few good things from some friends, has anyone had any Boon bred horses do well in the barrel pen? I know they have a lot of cow and performance breeding!

I think Rusty Quam has a stud? He is a looker that's for sure.

If you were talking about Peptoboonsmal or Royal Blue Boon bloodlines then I'd definitely say yes but it looks like Cookes Boon doesn't have a ton going for him (just in my opinion). I know some people really like the Tivio line, which looks like it's on his sire's and dam's side, but personally I'm not a fan. NOt too gritty or maybe a little sensitive to me (or maybe my horse was just a fluke). I would say that the only way Cookes Boon actually makes him a "Boon" is from Boon Bar, who was also Royal Blue Boon's sire. Good cutting horse and sire but doesn't really catch my attention too much in the barrel racing pen. BUT, every horse is different of course.

The pedigree doesn't do anything for me.

Barrels - meh. Not your typical, trendy lines. But that doesn't mean the horse won't be a good one in the pen.

I would jump on that pedigree in a second for a heel horse or breakaway depending on size. The red buck in that is interesting.

I think the take home is this (my opinion only) - good using lines, should be athletic, should have a sound mind (meaning once trained, they won't loose it), probably will be built a bit bigger with a longer stride.

Good Luck.

This is my guy-a lot of other great names on his pedigree but the stud has produced many really nice barrel horses in this area.  The one thing the owner of the stud has always tried to do is breed him to a race bred mare to give a little more run!  My horse is pretty smart and loves to run barrels-track steers-he's not super great yet but I'm not giving up on him anytime soon.

She is big 15.3 and she is long, but I've never had trouble with any longer backed horses running barrels they just have a different turning style and can cover lots of ground.

She seems very smart, she's very quiet and honest but a little worried and nervous!

I'm excited to see how she does since she has brothers and sisters from the boon stud placing in 1/2D down here in barrel races.

She can from Gary Langfords ranch.
