Location: Millington, TN | My horse is being tested for leptospirosis. I was wondering if any of you have dealt with this. Right now she is on eye meds and banamine. She has uveitis back in September in her right eye which cleared up in about a week. Now she has uveitis and impaired vision in the left eye. I am really worried about her. We caught it early though. Her eye was closed, watering and very painful. Now she can open it but it is very cloudy but my vet said that is normal. I am so worried about her colicing too because she is on Atropine and this weather is crazy. It is in the 40's today and will be 75 by Christmas.
Also this is not the first time she has hurt her eye. A few years ago she injured the left and we had to a lavage system for six weeks. |

| you might want to contact Dr. Schell on secondvet.com. He has done studies on uveitis and eye problems. He may be able to help you. I have a horse with limited sight due to an eye injury that turned into a fungal infection and bacterial infection. Not the same thing but he still helped me. I believe that he has helped clear some of the scar tissue, although my horse still has limited sight in that eye, he seems to have a little more than before and the scar tissue has thinned somewhat. I am sorry you are going through this. |

Location: Millington, TN | Thank you. I will contact him. One of my friend's horses had the fungal infection. He had to be rushed to Miss State for treatment. He is ok now but has a long road to recovery. He gets meds six times a day....... |

| He had to have the lavage for 6 weeks and when it was still in we kept it up until it finally broke at about 10 weeks. He was a bugger to doctor even with cookies, lots of cookies, lol. But we are in the process of getting back in shape for the upcoming season. I really don't think the limited sight is going to be a problem, I may have a few adjustments to make, like giving him more time to look at spooky things, but if I do that he seems perfectly happy to continue on as he always did. Keep up us updated on treatments and how your horse is doing. Eyes are so durn tricky.  |

Location: Millington, TN | Oh I know! She is horrbile. I don't have a lavage right now. My vet last time ran the lavage to her withers so it was not bad at all. So right now it is a pain!!!!!
I am glad your horse is better!

| we weaved the lavage into my horse's mane but that was because he was not a mane rubber and he was confined to a stall where he could not stick his head through anything. Those lavages are awesome. We also took blood and spun it and then I injected that into the lavage. My vet was pretty insistent that I do that several times a day for the first 6 weeks I think. |

Location: At the barn | Yes, I tested my entire barn. Are you doing eye drops daily?
I did a round of Oxytetracycline via 500ml bag of fluid for 5 days I believe. Then retested and my mare with ERU was clear of lepto.
It's horrible to see your horse deal with this I know. I also did Diclofenac ointment in her eyes. But the steroid drops are what really made the difference and IV Banamine.
Just be religious with her meds and I also tried herbal supplements. |

Location: Millington, TN | We have to gotten the results back yet for lepto so we are not treating for it just yet. They should be back Monday. She is on Atropine and a antibiotic (can't remember the name) plus banamine (paste form). Both the Atropine and antibiotic are ointments that I put in her eye. 2x daily for and Atopine and 3x daliy for the antibiotic. Her eye is much clearer today and she seems to have better vision in that eye too! YAY! |

Location: Down South Mississippi | My good horse is blind in his left eye caused by lepto. He lives on daily aspirin and msm, to keep flare ups at bay. Research it! It works! |

| Leptosrirosis was actually first discovered in my county back in the day. I had no idea until my sisters mare was diagnosed last summer and we got a history lesson. Women actually contracted it from the cattle on their ranches and were miscarrying frequently and a local vet finally put it all together.
Anywho, her vet pretty much said a lifetime of anti-inflammatory medicines to keep the blood vessels shrunk down and then when she had a flair up to use the prescribed antibiotics.
He never made her lavage it, and he's one of the top equine vets in the state, so idk why that was never mentioned by him.

Location: Millington, TN | Well she did test positivie for lepto. My vet ordered enrofloxacin powder. Now both eyes are watering so we started treating both eyes with the meds yesterday. I will look into the asprin. I have not looked into the enrofloxacin powder yet. |
