Stifle Injury?

I sold my gelding about a year and a half ago only to have terrible luck and buy him back in September '15. To make a long story short, he has injured a ligament on the outside of his stifle which resulted in abnormal bone growth. My vet injected him and put him on Previcox, has me walking him for 30 minutes every day for 30 days before a re-check. I just want opinions on what one would do? She is worried about his longevity as a barrel horse if he even ever does get up and running again. Would you continue running him on previcox, bute and a joint sup when he hasn't ran in almost 2 years? He's never been better than a 4D/5D horse, but he's all I've got. I'm a college student and buying another horse is really out of question.

Ugg. I'm sorry! Did the ligament calcify? Is that what you mean?
If so, he's up a creek. Any time bone starts growing or calcium deposits where its not supposed to, it sure scares me to death to try to work one. Might be better to turn him out or sell him as a trail horse, and start saving for a different horse. Glad you're working with your vet! Just ask her, point blank, if he'll be sound enough to run without pain, and ask her to help you make the judgment call for the sake of the horse. Trust me, she'll appreciate you and help you decide what's best for him.

JMHO, but I wouldn't run him against your vet's advice. Stifle injuries take a while, but hopefully with some diagnostics, you could get a prognosis for his future. My gelding had a sore stifle that didn't have any significant findings with diagnostics
(x-ray & ultrasound
). I gave him a month or so off and invested in a PHT MagnaCu stifle wrap thingie, which seemed to help. After he passed his follow up exam, I legged him up again and he's fine. I do think the MagnaCu offers him some relief, even now that he is sound...
I know that probably isn't much help. Injuries suck and stifle injuries are scary! Hugs!

I would buy some Harlstons Blister and Blister the stifle. You could also do a internal blister. The magna cu stifle wrap wuld help also. Instead of Previcox, I would go to second vet.com and ask Dr Schell. I use Total and Immune and on days Im running the plus. I no longer have to use Previcox. It is not as hard on the stomach as Butte, but still has its problems. Also if you have access to a laser.
