| What are you using to grind flax seed? I have gone through 3 "Mr Coffee" coffee bean grinders in the last 6 weeks. It's getting expensive lol! |

Location: North Dakota | Mine comes from the mill rolled-ground-but if I could get it whole again in the 50 pound sack I would rather do that. I was using a cheapy coffee bean grinder when I thought it had to be ground. |

Location: West Texas | When flaxseed is processed, it starts to become rancid and loose its nutritional profile almost immediately. Is the rolled flaxseed you feed stabilized? That does protect it, but usually stabilized flax is much more expensive. I have become a big fan of whole flax! |

| can they (and us) process it whole? I was told eating it whole was a waste of money as it just passes through. I have an awesome little grinder but can't remember what the brand is at the moment. |

Location: West Texas | There is a myth about whole flaxseeds not being able to be processed by a horse (I do not know about humans). That is everywhere and still widely believed. However, new research is finding that to be false.
Now here is the interesting part. The main component of flax is oil. The people that claimed flax could not be utilized unless ground (most often supposed experts) seem to be idiots because ANYONE that has ever fed whole flax can tell you the horse will shine up like a new penny. I wonder how this happens if the whole flax is just passed through the manure? Makes you wonder.....

Location: Somewhere between S@% stirrer and Saint | whole Flax seed is not digestible. Once it is ground up it needs to be refrigerated and consumed rather quickly so it won't go ransid.I personally us ground flax seed and ground Chia seeds and coconut flour for my stomach in the morning in my protein drink. 3 heaping teaspoon full. |

No it is not stabilized-I would rather feed the whole but that is not what is available. We are in full winter stage right now, I keep it in the barn in a freezer and it seems to work pretty good-unstabilized flax is better than no flax at all-plus if it gets rancid smelling I feed it to the steers and buy a new bag. |

| How much ground flax do you feed? And do the horses like it by itself or do you feed it with other grains? Thanks! |

Location: North Dakota | I feed a cup with my about 2 pounds of whole oats-ground is hard for them to eat on their own-it gets stuck and "gummed" up in their mouth. Beware it can cause problems fed alone when ground. Had a 3 yr old get into my bag of ground flax-worse case of choke I've ever, ever had to deal with-vet agreed with me. Was sure he was going to die! Took over an hour to get a tube to pass and he of course will always struggle with choke after stretching his esophagus so far. |

| I grind mine at feeding time. Yes, it looses nutritional value as soon as it is ground and oxygen reaches it, but not that much if it is fed immediately. It digests better ground than whole. I use a KRUPS, I've had it a year with no problems. Don't wash it with water, wipe it out with a paper towel(can use a damp one as long as you dry it immediately). I feed a cup in the morning and a cup in the evening, about 3 cups is 1lb, so just shy of a lb. |

1cup per day of ground. I have fed ground that I ground up for as many as 8 horses a day. Thats a lot of grinding! I feed it whole to all but a couple and I think I saw more benefit ground really, especially with those that had digestive issues. I used the same coffee grinder for 6 years - black & Decker white grinder. One thing that helps is grinding just a little at a time - don't fill it up. |

I agree, dont grind it all at once....I grind about 1/2 cup, then add the other 1/2 after to grinder.....it doesnt stress it as much |
