I stay BUSY... College, homework, job, horses, tutoring, etc. I stay BUSY
I have two open horses who have gotten rather out of shape this last school term because I just cannot figure out a schedule that allows me to ride!
Where do you find time to ride when you have no time at all? Anyone else have this problem?

Honestly, sometimes my horses just come second. I am busy also. I work full time, I have an 1.5 commute time, and I have other things to do when I get home - groceries, clean house, cook dinner, and my husband works on cars so I spend a lot of time in the garage helping him and going to his events. Sometimes I just can't get out and ride after doing all of that AND cleaning stalls and feeding! It's just life, and I'm ok with that.

I ride when I'm able to, which is more in the summer since there is more daylight.

When I was in college I usually rode at 10-11:00 at night or 4-5:00 in the AM before classes, but I kept my horses at an indoor barn or hauled to one when they were on pasture. I thrived on 4-5 hrs of sleep - take advantage of that if you can!!

College is such a busy time that I know most of my friends who competed really just took a step back from it all and focused on their here-and-now over the horses.  I went to law school with a team roper and she hated how out of shape the horses were and the lack of time (law school is the worst!) that always came into play on not being able to ride on a regular basis.  We were always in class or stuck reading somewhere it was almost impossible.  It became a thing where she had to concentrate on one horse alone to keep legged up more and had friends (like me) to help keep the other ones legged up to some degree.  We actually ended up doing a lot of bonding time -- bareback trial riding stuff -- and brushing/stable cleaning things with them that we really spent time on groundwork and loving on them more so-to-speak.  We concentrated on the fun side and let the competitive side slide to a certain degree.

When you do find a spare moment to ride--ride one, pony the other.  Then switch it up next time.

I'm a first year high school/jr high teacher in an alternate route program so I have 12 hours of college classes (9 graduate hours, 3 undergrad hours) this semester plus my full-time teaching job, 4 barrel horses, a boyfriend who lives an hour & 45 minutes away from me and I'm participating in our school staff's Biggest Loser competition so I'm trying to work out and eat healthy too. It's a load to say the least.

What I have been doing that's working so far includes sitting down for 5 minutes when I first get home from school before I change clothes and hurry out to work horses. I use that 5 minutes to pet my dog, relax, play a game of solitaire on my computer, watch part of a TV episode on DVD, make notes about what else I've got to do after chores that night, etc. I always grab a quick snack at this time too because I'm hungry when I come home from school and I know that I'll probably be outside until close to 6 p.m.

After that short break, I change clothes and head outside to work horses. In December, I was riding Chance and ponying the other 3 a couple days a week and then doing extra training sessions or workouts with one or two horses on another day. Luckily, at that point in the year, everyone was legged up so I was just trying to keep them in shape on the super short days. When the ground was dry enough, I could free lunge one in the round pen after dark since there's a yard light right over it, and I could even do a little riding in there too. Maybe the biggest key is I have accepted that I won't ride every day, and that makes it easier to settle for riding 3 days during the week. I also figure that even a 10 minute ride is better than nothing so if I can get outside and do something with the horses, I try to.

Once I've ridden and done chores, I come inside and finish whatever TV episode I was watching, play some more solitaire, maybe grade some papers, do a bit of homework for my online classes, think about lesson plans for the next few days, etc. I'll throw something together for dinner, do a workout in the living room, make my grocery run, and just relax until about 9 p.m. Then I usually walk back out to the horse pen, check on them and throw some more hay. Most nights I take a reading assignment to bed with me and read until my eyes are too heavy to stay open any more. Last night it was The Tempest and next week it will be Frankenstein since those are required reading for one class.

 This was my college schedule:

7-2: classes, homework.  I wouldn't leave campus.
2-430: ride/practice
5-10: work

key thing for me was not leaving campus in between classes.  Use that down time to study and get other homework done.
