It's not my fault I'm perfect

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | I have a question, besides the obvious of the saddle not fitting, what causes roughed up hair above the rigging only on one side. This side being the left. I always use a mounting block so it is not from me hanging on the side getting on. Not on the back itself, but it is some major hair burn about where my lower thigh is, above my knee.

Yes, but don't you think that is a strange spot to have movement kind of?? Her right, I believe. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | I had the same exact problem with the Meleta Brown saddle on my gelding. The angle of the bars was wrong for him, and even though it had enough flare, his right shoulder was pushing the saddle over to the left with every stride. I could feel it, and you could see where the movement was by the roughed hair it left. |

Makes sense, so what did you end up doing, playing the saddle fit game?
It's frustrating because when I work her at home she never has roughed up hair, it seems to only be after a run at a barrel race. It would be different if it was constant. Blah. |

Location: NE Texas | My situation is that my horse is hip high, so everything I ride him with, no matter what pad or saddle combo, appears to rub him (back and forth) on his lower back. Doesn't matter what it is. From now on, i'm going to buy horses based on if my saddle will fit them or not, rathar than finding a saddle to fit the horse I like. LOL |

Yep. He ended up in a (new tree) Merrill after trying several different things. |

Location: between here and there | My thought is, what changes when you show? I would imagine your horse is more anxious at a show and raises his head which in turn drops his back - which changes the way your saddle would fit. Probably is from the stirrup leather moving on that side which comes from you
changing HOW you are riding him, too. Now, this said, it's a 'guess' as what is happening but since you mentioned he doesn't do it at home, just at shows. If it doesn't do it at home, I wouldn't be terribly worried about it, but be aware and palpate his back after a show to make sure it isn't sore.

Well, my thinking has been I don't make fast runs at home, ever. So that would be the only difference in at home vs. at a competition?? It seemed to happen behind 2nd barrel, and we go to the right first so it would be our first 'complete turn' and it must grab and pull? ETA: I would do that, however SHE STOPPED on the way home. So I need to find something else obviously........LOL
Herbie- That happens with this mare too, I put show sheen or something slippery above her hips but she is so short backed everything rubs her as well!

Location: Oklahoma | for the ones bout the saddle rubbing towards the back try a thicker pad. it should still give your saddle the same fit but helps keep the back part off of your horses lower back. Pads are getting thinner and thinner. I still think we need some padding |

Location: NE Texas | Thanks turnburnsis, but if I get anything thicker than the CSI pad I have, i'll be rolling right off of there! HAHA I think it's just the way my horse is made being hip high and his back coming up from lowest point at his shoulder. |

Location: between here and there | For the horses with the rub behind the saddle, make sure you pad is long enough and also use a snugged up rear flank. No daylight should help with the movement you are getting. Having a horse that has a higher butt usually drives a saddle down onto the withers or shoulders more. If it's still rubbing, I'd be changing saddles.
On the horse stopping on the way home, I would say saddle isn't fitting as well as you thought. Again, hard to say without being there and I'm glad to look at pictures if anyone wants to send them to me.

I agree with Herbie...If I ever buy another horse the first thing I'm going to do is see if any of my saddles fit and if not..I'll move on..LOL |
