GRRRR! I got the papers on a horse I just bought from AQHA yesterday. Apparently they got caught in the sorting machine at the post office and the edge looks like a rat chewed them. They were kind enough to put the shredded envelope and torn papers in a little plastic baggy to show how much they really care.
The papers are still legible but look like crap. I really want to get replacement papers, in case we end up selling him, but I don't want to pay for them and I'm pretty sure if I get new ones they say "duplicate" or something to that effect on the new certificate. I am not sure which is worse, papers that look like a rat used them as nesting material or a duplicate certificate. How would you feel as buyer purchasing a horse that did not have an original certificate?

I had to get new papers for one of mine last year and they do not say duplicate on them. They look exactly the same as the original copy.

Each time a horse is transferred into a new name Aqha issues new papers. I personally would keep the ratty one as if you do sell the horse, when they send the papers in, they will get a shiny new copy.
Also to get a duplicate copy will cost 35

Oh no!! I am picky about stuff like that too. I guess you just have to decide whether you can deal with it being all ratty looking or if it is worth $35 to you to get them replaced.
I do think that it may be worth it to call the AQHA and tell them what happened, maybe they will work with you. Surely you aren't the only person this has happened to. All they can do is say no
