Hello - this is an off the track mare finishing up 60 days of training.  We are concerned with the lead swapping.  She flexes fine with no lameness but i am thinking stifle or hock injections are needed.  Anyone deal with the swapping issue and find a fix?

if possible i would put her in a roundpen and trot and lope both directions and video her concentrating on the hind end. also deep sand in that pen. look for the stifle catching

I had her vetted twice. We couldnt find a thing.  I only see it when she's circling.  I am hauling her next Friday to a facility to get a full lameness exam.

Get X-rays.

Is she as "hot" to ride as she looks in the video?  It looks to me that she doesn't have a lot of collection....which could be from sore hocks or stifles OR that she's being pushy and just wants to GO.  I know she's coming off of 60 days of training but I think I would try to practice a little more on collection and toning down her attitude....Have you ever done the 4 barrel drill to see if she ever settles in?  You turn all the same direction and usually they will get a pretty good cadence and settle in and you should be able to collect them up and into the bridle a little more......
To me, she looks pushy not necessarily sore.  Hocks or stifles they will bunny hop more than your horse is-IMO.

Yes, she is "hot".  She needs some mental down time, that i am sure of but i want to rule out sore.  She came right from the track into barrel training.  She has always had to "work" and doesnt know how not to.

I think the working is OK-it's just the pattern has plenty of starts and stops that similates the "GO" more than whoa....
She's trying to learn how to use her body like she always has but needs to learn some new "harder" fundamentals in order for her body to work correctly for the task you're trying with her.

Someone else mentioned radiographs-I would 100% agree that is the only way to know what you're looking at, besides off the track it would be good to know what you're dealing with before you get too far into this horse.

Ditto...I see an awkwardness and just trouble figuring out how to move and be collected while hot.

Do you have a timeline on her? Would it set you back to just turn her out for a bit and bring her back slow and easy? What did X-rays show?

A good lameness vet, hock injections, Adequan, and a great chiropractor straightened mine out that looked a bit like this.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. This horse is avoiding splitting the back legs and it has nothing to do with her being hot. She's trying to avoid reaching with the inside hind. I'd be more inclined to say she's trying to the best of her ability and it hurts her to do so, hence the hotness coming out.

I'd look at hocks and stifles. But to be honest, it looks more like an SI issue to me. I'd like to see her travel out in a pasture. Does she want to use the hind end when she plays or does she avoid hard stops and turns? Does she travel with her hocks out behind her? Cross fire? I've seen a lot of SI issues in OT horses. I personally think it's because of how hard they leave the gate.

I would at least get x-rays.

When my Red had a fusing hock on the right side, his hocks actually flexed fine. Couldn't believe the advanced changes we saw on the hock x-rays when we did them. Flexing is good and all but doesn't tell you the whole story! Since then, x-rays are always first on my list. They are relatively cheap and give you valuable information.

I think she needs more work on how to balance herself. It looks like she is rushing and is fighting you the whole way. If you didn't have a lameness exam I'd be concerned about lameness/soreness issues but since you've had two I would tend to lead more towards her needing more time off pattern.

I'm not ruling out pain and it's a good idea to get another opinion to be sure but I think more time off the pattern getting her balanced, light, and responsive and a lot of the issues you're having may go away.

Best of luck and let us know how the exam goes.

I do see how she doesn't want to stick the leg...   She does equally on both sides though… So I wonder if she doesn't KNOW that she needs to plant that leg yet?   I'd at least get hock x-rays.
