Location: Georgia | Ok so I know this is a bit of a long shot. We just arent having much luck with our animals this year. Two weeks ago our indoor siamese cat (5 years old) started becoming dissoriented and within a few days she could barely walk straight. We took her to the vet and they concluded she was in liver failure. The vet told us that he has seen cats come out of it with medication so we decided to treat it. We left her at the clinic for 3 days. They ran IVs and started her on meds. She starting improving slightly so we brought her home and we have been giving her the meds here. She is still dissoriented acting but better than when we brought her home. She seems to be improving a tiny bit but she refuses to eat. She is losing weight. If she doesnt start eating soon we will put her down because we wont let her starve herself to death. We have tried all kinds of food. She acts interested for a split second but then turns her head away. Has anyone gone through something similar with a cat before? Any advice? |

Location: Memphis, TN | I successfully treated my cat at home for liver failure. I had to give him the pills, lactated ringers sub q, and I force fed him science diet a/d mixed with non flavored pedialyte the first few days. It was a thick liquid that I syringed into his mouth. Messy and it was a process but it worked. Once he started feeling better he started eating on his own again. I slowly took the pedialyte out until it was straight a/d then started mixing his dry food in until I could phase the a/d out. The hardest part was giving him his pills once he started feeling better and could fight harder! He was around 10 when he went through it and he ended up living until he was 15 then my dogs killed him. He was still very healthy when he died. Broke my heart as I had owned him his entire life. I'll be praying your kitty pulls through. My little girl loves cats but we obviously can't have another one right now. |

This gives me so much hope. We mixed some food in a blender tonight and force fed her about a syringe full. She wasnt happy with us but it got in her stomach. We have been giving her antibiotics, the liver pill and something for her appetite (which is obviously not working). I can pick up some pedialyte. How did you mix it? Was there a certain ratio? We should have started force feeding her sooner but we just assumed she would start eating. |

If you can get to a vet or pet store that sells the science diet a/d I highly recommend it. Petsmart carries it around here. It's a high calorie soft food and most animals love the smell. I would just pour the pedialyte in a bowl with a spoonful of two of the wet food and mix it together until it was a liquid then transferred it to the syringe. I would ask if your vet will let you do the fluids at home too. It is very easy and it only took 30 seconds or so for the amount needed for a cat. I could stick him and hold him by myself while it ran. I had worked for my vet before so that may be why he was comfortable letting me do it. It really helped to get that extra in him though. I remember it being about a two week ordeal before we knew he was for sure coming out of it. He was bad when I took him in too. Very skinny and yellow all over. I had just had my son and took his hiding and not eating as having issues with the new baby. It wasn't until he came out one day and let me love on him that I realized how skinny he was. My vet admitted afterwards he didn't think he was going to make it and was very surprised that he did. I think the biggest help was keeping the nutrition in him. |

| I had a cat with similar symptoms. Total liver failure ! As it turns out neighbors tractor had a coolant leak and when I let her out she was licking the antifreeze. Totally disoriented and i actually per her down myself at home. I called my vet and he told me then dosage of ace to give her. Glad yours is getting treated! |

Thank you guys for the advice and prayers. She took a turn for the worse last night so we had her put to sleep this morning. I prayed before I went to bed that we would be able to make a decision and this morning it was very clear what needed to be done. Thank you all again. |

I'm so sorry. . . I had to put my Foxy to sleep a month ago--on the day I was supposed to bring him home from the vet. But it was so obvious he was tired and ready to go. Sometimes God blesses us by letting us know when it's time. Many hugs to you. |
