This is my first foal and my mare is a maiden. When do they typically start bagging up (I know every mare can be different and it's hard to tell)? This mare is about 300 days and has a small bag.

Every mare is different, and as a maiden mare it will be hard to tell what her tendencies might be. If she is over 300 days it is normal for her body to start changing. Normal foaling range is between 320 and 360 days. However go back and figure out exactly when she was bred and count the days. If she starts really bagging up, dilating, loosening up in the rump, and/or waxing and she is not at least at 320 days, contact your vet. I ignored these symptoms in my mare thinking that she was just going a little faster than normal and I lost the foal to placentitis. She ended up foaling at 297 days and the foal's lungs weren't developed. I am sure she is just fine, but I learned the hard way about not keeping closer tabs on days and symptoms. Good luck with your baby! It is so fun to watch them grow.

My maiden mare just foaled on Wednesday.  She was 353 days.  She started bagging up the end of January/early February.

I had one that was very experienced. We bought her bred from a liquidation when the old man passed away. The date of breeding was unknown. Her udder started to enlarge in February, and that mare didn't foal until the first part of May.

Mine is at 287 days and all she wants to do is eat - she about runs you over during feeding time. I can't wait for this baby!!
